The Sony Xperia S is the current champion of the NXT series and comes aptly armed with a tack-sharp 720p screen and 12MP worth of stills. It sets a new design trend for the Xperia line and brings massive improvements to it.The Xperia S comes at a time of change in the Android world with quad-core processors and Ice Cream Sandwich looming on the horizon. The Xperia S is priced below those new-fangled flagships however, and in its range it's quite the fighter.
But while the OS update is just a matter of time, what most other competing phones don't have (and can't get via an update) is the 342ppi pixel density of the 4.3" 720p screen or the 12MP camera. Those things give it a leg up against outgoing flagships and even upcoming upper-midrangers.
I have this phone for one month, and it's incredible. But battery life is short.Music player is great, great price. For me this phone is better than samsung galaxy nexus,s2 and other phones.....................
i had always been a apple fan, since the 1st iphone, but latey iphone 4s started to show age and i needed a upgrade... i went to my local dealer and asked him for the best phone on the market. He brought out a Samsung Galaxy S3... one look at the phone and i was like..:S is that really the best? does it look like a 600 buck phone from that crapy build quality?.He told me its quad core and all that.... Since when do we need quad cores for cell phones?? isnt that just a market move? put more cores in and we get good results..AMD made a 8core processor that got beaten by a quad core Intel I5 2500k.I asked him to show me something more appealing, i was shown HTC one X, Droid Razer MAXX and finaly the xperia S...which just blew me away... 342ppi... one of the best looking android phone, with the best display. I dont care about Super AMOLED HD crap. Find me a phone that has better display than Xperia S!!!, and i am not retarded to look @ the screen from different angles to see if i can read the txts, that is for geeks.. why the hell would u want to view your screen from different angles??
ok now to the review
only problem with this phone was the battery life... it needed constant charging and the battery drain was horrible, i would lose 1% off 100% just by unpluging the charger.
Thankfuly ICS arrived and battery problems are gone. With ICS this phone has turned into a awsome multimedia device, The walkman and library app is fantastic.
The build quality is excellent, I dont want a weightless leaf in my hand, i want a proper solid phone and xperia S just fits that. It loosk sleek and sexy, the transparent white @ the bottom looks brilliant. I heard complains that the touch buttons are not responsive, however i never had a problem with them. The sound quality is very good and loud thnx to X loud, The bravia engine does its magic with excellent Quality.
As for galaxy S3 owners.... My gf owns one and whenever we do side by side comparison of display and movie playback...Xperia S blows her phone to dust.
Also i am not a Geek who takes benchmarks on my phone to see which XYZ geekness runs faster.!
buy this phone its that good!!
This is a woooowww phone.I think Sony should have done more publicity to it because is really a great phone.
The camera is great. Finally smartphones with big megapixel not like all the other new phones like iphone 4s(8 mp),samsung galaxy s3(8 mp),htc one x(8 mp) etc etc
Everybody asks that what kind of phone is it?No one has ever seen one like that because lets say the truth it is really cool and great design.Nowadays everybody has an iphone and i think it is just boring .
I have been using this phone for around 3 months already. It is a really great phone. The UI look much better than other brands, the designs are awesome. I can guarantee that the screen on the Xperia S is the best of all smartphones out there. The screen is crystal clear. You can never see any pixel or anything not clear with this screen. The camera is also amazing. However, in low lights the camera contains a lot of noise. In place with lights the camera is really clear though. I have no problem with the build quality because the back cover can be cleaned easily. The phone don't drop while in my hands. With dual-core processor, the phone is not slow at all. I have no lag playing games at all. It's comparable with quad-core phones.
Like many smartphones today, the battery life is not so long. The battery is enough for 1 day use [with 3G/Wifi turned on frequently]. After I upgraded to ICS the battery life became better.
I'm really happy with the Xperia S. The price is not high and the performance is great.
Really good phone. Not so good battery but after the update to .....73 the battery life is longer. The display is amazing the bravia engine is working pretty well. The loudspeaker is amazing for phone thanks to xLoud and also provides strong and clear sound.
Well done Sony! In my opinion Sony is just owning in every market they are working in. From televisions, LED tv's to mobile phones. And yet again Sony astonished us with this beautiful device. I do accept the fact that the phone has some done-sides, but looking to the positive sides of it, the phone blows away the cons like a tornado blowing away the cows on a farm. Finally it's already known that it defeated Samsung's Galaxy S2 in all fronts...
sony make good device just some dissapointment is, it use snapdragon s3 an old processor but it is quite fast at all fact. good image quality and very clear screen, i love the screen and the design so much
Body & Accessories:
I am impressed by the build quality. The handset handles well. Although it looks much more bulkier than samsung galaxy s, when you put two phones side by side, it is not that much different. The box I purchased in Belgium was bundled with a screen protector inside the box. Also, they were selling a specifically designed case, which I purchased and happilly using. Sony decided to use the same standard apple uses for the 3.5 mm jack, so the "for iphone" headphones with mics and buttons will work in this headset (the volume buttons are software related and might not be supported). The set comes with a supprisingly good noise isolating (in-ear) headphone which I am using in my macbook pro as I write this review (the mic and the button works as expected). The biggest complaint I have is the non-removable battery, since I have the habit of carrying two batteries when I am travelling. Also the way they designed the usb port is not to my taste, I don't like that method of covering the port with a dangling plastic cover. I much preferred samsung galaxy s on this.
Screen:
It is stunning. It is on par with the screen in my ipad 3rd gen, but I think ipad might have a better color accuracy. I am not sure on this, since I was unable to find similar software to compare. It is bright, and visible in daylight without much problems.
User interface:
I really miss the hardware button in samsung galaxy s, which I was using to wake the phone up, receive calls when I have glove in my hands etc. There are no significant problems with capacitive buttons, and the two level camera button is very nice. The software is heavily modified by sony. It looks very nice. It has some nice tricks, but it is hard to customize. I really miss the swype keyboard from samsung, the running applications widget, the office suite, the file explorer and etc. I think the software bundle of samsung was more suitable for my kind of use.
Camera:
Instant on is great! The camera itself is, well, it depends. If you like post-processing the jpeg engine gives you a nice opportunity. Software maximises detail. A bit of noise filtering and color correction, and you end up with usable photos. However, this means that the jpeg engine does end up with too much noise out of camera, and there is no way of controlling how the camera behaves. Sony should've allowed user to decide more settings. It is painful to see the potent sensor, but being forced to use some settings I don't desire. I hope they will fix this in a later release.
As a phone:
It is great improvement over samsung galaxy s, the earpiece and speakerphone is loud. Unlike samsung, the speaker does not get blocked easily and the phone gets itself heard. Noise cannelation works nice. Haptic feedback is much stronger. Compared to ipad however, the microphone seems not to work well in distance. Probably the noise cancellation interfering.
nice phone for the price.. got everything you need... and best thing is the Music player ............
music lovers should go for it..........
also the camera is awesomely quick ... even quicker then digicam as Xperia dont need to boot... like digicams.. just unlock to the camera and click with dedicated button...
ICS is not fat away... and as iCS has very little share in market delay is not disadvantage
i just liked it
It has been more than a month since i bought this amazing phone. From the first time I've put my hands on it, i really felt i'm holding a piece of art. The design: is very unique, soild & sexy. The back is curved to make it more comfortable in hands. The plastic isn't light & weak at all. it has a strong plastic cover coated with anti-stain black matte layer which really feels good in hands. The transparent bar down the phone is giving the design an iconic shape which make many people ask me to hold it or even ask which brand this phone when they see the phone in my hands...it catches the eye. In the same time it's the antenna which provides a better perception. If you received a call in dark you'll see the transparent bar lights go on..it giving the phone a very cool look. The side buttons plus the lock button are so well reachable & solid.
The Camera: It's totally different & cannot be compared any other cam out there. Quality & speed are well provided by this cam in the xperia s plus the 3D panorama & multi-angle capturing which makes you can have a lot of fun with it. For the ongoing capturing videos or pics , this is the perfect camera phone for it. you can capture a photo in less than 1.5 secs from sleep mode. that is a huge advantage in my opinion to be in a 12Mp cam. i used that option a lot which called the "Quick launch" mode & it gives clear photos. the cam got a numerous options & all works so well like smile detection, auto focus, image stablizer, metering, auto scene selector, auto flash with red eye reduction, white balance & much more..all these specs work very smooth & very effective giving a very sharp, clear & colorful photo.
Media: Sony has been well known worldwide for being the best in media. they had put their long experience in media in that phone. i really enjoy play my music on it. you'll also enjoy going through your music with the large Albums Art & 10 Sense Me playlists making it so easy to pick up the right songs with the right mood without shuffling songs you don't wanna hear. The Loud speaker has the xLoud feature which provide louder & better sound through it. The Phone's music output is superb specially in my car. The ear pieces come with it in the box aren't cheap or weak at all...i was surprised by the clarity of the sound & the power of the bass it got . The pictures gallery is well organized with a very cool 2D view plus you can also sync your picasa web albums or google plus or facebook photos with ur gallery to view them easily in seconds without storing all these photos you got on the phone.
3G data transfer is really fast plus the Bluetooth & Wifi perception is pretty awesome.
The Screen is highly sensitive & flows smoothly. Gaming is also very amusing with this HD screen. The Phone also comes with Office pro suite & scan to pdf app plus Adobe reader which makes it also a perfect business phone. Finally, I highly recommends this Phone..Amazing 12MP cam...perfect for Business...strong in media & gaming.
The BEST phone I ever used so far! It is a the best phone in the market yet n i think that it is the better cell phone than the iphone 4s but its ok. It has the 12.1 mega pixel camera which's better then perfect.
Sony's first attempt to go it alone, without Ericsson, is a huge step forward for the company, the phone is a brilliant piece of kit, very well constructed despite the use of plastic it feels very high quality and the matte plastic backing feel very comfortable in the hand, the phone itself is very comfortable to hold and fits nicely in the palm (i was worried it would be too big, having never owned a 4.3'' device before, but it isnt too big at all and took no getting used to whatsoever) the device is very aesthetically pleasing and ive had a lot of admirer's already - always a good sign. Love the translucent bar and the capacitive buttons, which by the way, take some getting used to but after a few days use work flawlessly. The phone also feature a very useful dedicated camera button and notification light in all different colours at the top of the device for texts, battery, apps etc.
Moving on to the OS it is very smooth with the dual core processor and the live wallpaper is very fluid, the overlay over the standard android interface is very minimal but effective and the phone, despite running Android 2.3 will shortly be upgradeable to 4.0 ICS, which it is evident the phone was made for (hence the three capacitive buttons) finally, I personally prefer the customization that the android OS offers over iOS, the device home screen feels cleaner than all of the iOS folders on my iPod. However, if you're an iOS user the Android interface may take some getting used to, but is not difficult to navigate.
The real sweet spot of this device however is the media. The screen is the best ever on a mobile device, putting both superAMOLED and Retina display to shame with such an amazing pixel density. Whites can be a bit yellowish however compared to the two displays mentioned above, but unless they are side by side this is not noticeable. The Camera also produces brilliant results, which beat both my friend's Galaxy SII and another friend's iPhone 4S. Pictures were clear and at 1.4secs from lock screen to shot this is very impressive, shots are full of detail, and very clean thanks to its Exmor R sensor, which only faulters minimally when zooming in as far as possible. The device also plays back both music and video effortlessly thanks to its xLOUD and BRAVIA engine respectively.
Call quality is also a strong point, and text messaging is a breeze thanks to it very responsive keyboard and 4.3'' screen, even after owning a physical keyboard phone I was very impressed by this.
Only downside, as with all large screen devices is the battery life, I managed to get about 16hours out of it sending roughly 50 texts, a bit of internet browsing and a couple of hours of listening to music as well as about an hour or so on apps yesterday, which is still very respectable for a screen of this quality and an Android device, hopefully 4.0 will aid this aswell, it is, however a shame that the battery is non removable, but this shouldnt be an issue to most casual users.
