I love this phone! I don't understand why it's getting harsh reviews. I have had it since august 22nd '08 and it still works like the first day I got it. people who use the key pad to text on that say it's slow are retarded... Do you have speed messaging set to on? No, I didn't think so, turn it on proble solved, and the reason why it keeps freezing is probably cuz you don't have a screen protector. Like I said I've had my phone 4 6 months now, and it's like it's brand new
I got this phone i Oct 08 and its now Jan 09. I loved this phone at first...i traded it for my blackberry pearl bc it had more memory space on it (when i didn't have a memory card). Anyways...I thought it was amazing i loved that it was touchscree and everything like that, but now that i've had it for a while i've been having tons and tons of problems.
First, it freezes non stop. Second, it will shut off randomly during the day. If not once a day, then every other day. Third, i just got a memory card to save all my photos too and it worked great for 2 days. Today when i plugged it into charge it said USB connected...which its done before and was no big deal...but today i went to look at my pictures and they are ALL DELETED!!! I'm so mad it was a waste to even buy a memory card. i would have been better without it. Its also got the little problems like that tiny scroll bar.
Oh and if you want to txt using the T9 and its slow for you...all you have to do is exit out of the chat thing and actually reply to the message its self. if you try using T9 on the slide out part it will be very very slow. So its kinda annoying.
I must say that when I first got the LG Glimmer (a year ago) I was completely infatuated with it. It was the first touch screen phone I had ever had and truly had a great experience with it. But as time went by and the newness wore off, I realized that it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. For it to be someone's first touch screen, I think it would be a good phone to start off with to catch a feel of the whole new "touch" world. Now this is what I have to say for it. The scrollbar is ... well ... might as well be nonexistent. It's so small that you can hardly even see it. I didn't notice there even was one until a few months after I had it. The phone always freezes now. I've had calls coming in and all of a sudden the screen would get stuck and I couldn't cut it off so I would have to pull the back off and pull the battery out just to get the phone to cut off. The charge sucks tremendously. I'm quite the texter so if you plan on keeping your hands on this phone at all times, then this isn't the phone for you. Also, when you text with the pullout keypad, if you use T-9 texting, it's EXTREMELY slow. It won't catch all the letters and it ends up giving you a word that looks nothing like you texted. Also, if someone called on call waiting and I flipped over ... it would show that contact's name if I were to ever get another phone call without hanging up. Which is extremely confusing. Sometimes when I would flip over with a caller to another it automatically put me on through to 3-way calling. I definitely didn't like that one. It's just most of a hassle to deal with than it is to actually enjoy now.
worst phone i have ever had it freezes up all the time. the ouch scrren is slow, and best of all it wont hold charge with perfect service. the usb port on the side the cover came off with in days. now i have to wrap the cord around the phone to hold pressure on yhe end to make it charge.
I just got this phone with U.S. Cellular a few weeks ago. A few of my friends had one, so i decided i had to get one! In the reviews below, I have read that the main complaint is the scroll bar. However, if you in your contacts for instance, you can just press in the middle or the bottom of the screen, and then slide your finger towards the top of the screen without lifting it up and that will make the contact list scroll down, which i find to be much easier than using the scroll bar. If you still think that's too hard, then why don't you just try typing in the first letter or so of that persons name. The camera is great, along with all the camera features packed in. Music player is fine, and the personalized menu(box with arrow in it) is great! It is also really cool that you can text or dial on the screen, or use the key pad. There is so much to love about this phone! It is definitally worth the money!
i just got a LG UX830 Glimmer and i really like it so far. It is hard to figure out sometimes, where to do this, where to find that, where to find all the features. but it'll eventually get you there. The touch screen is amazing. it's very nice, and large and easy to use. the slide is good, and i love how it vibrates when you touch it. I haven't had any problems with the ring tone yet... It is a bit bulky but it's because of the big screen. it's very "editable" you can edit , change, arrange everything on the phone so i think thats a big plus. you can choose whats all on the "menu icon" which i think is very helpful. i like the time and how you can drag the box around.
I bought this phone about 3 weeks ago, and about 1 week ago I started working at US cellular. I absolutely love this phone. I have no problem with the volume of the ringer I think it is really loud actually compared to my other phones, although when using the MP3 player the volume doesn't go very far. But this is the first phone I have put music on and used fairly often, I love the accessibility of the music from the main screen and how it continues to play as background music. My favorite features of the phone is honestly moving the clock! I think its the greatest and brag about it all the time. I love the touch feature and how big the screen is. The phone is bulky compared the my previous razr however thats all worth the huge screen. I also love the News Event Manager. When your having a hectic day it is a great feature! It keeps you updated with all the texts or calls yo have missed and just makes life so much easier. I did not like that taking the phone was sideways at first but it was a simple getting used to and now it causes no problems. I love the alarm only feature so that when I go to bed the next morning I don't have to worry about my phone ringing in class the next mornning. The only problem I did have with the phone was the scroller on the side which is VERY small however it you just click in the dark area it takes you to approx where you want to be and in contacts you can scroll using the side up/down buttons, which was a great relief for me to find! However the side buttons do not work in other applications like scrolling through the music. I believe the phone is very user friendly. Yes the menu button is not very traditional however how hard is it to ask your provider the difference between the menus and such and after that I find no problems the icons are pretty clear to as what they are and honestly all that is needed to love this phone is a little playing with the abilities... Thats how you find the best way to use the phone.
better then MOST us cellular phones
The good, if you use your phone as much as I do..(roughly 5000+a month) its service for calls is GREAT. very few dropped calls, good battery life, and you can easily use this with the supplied usb on your computer..I had several other phone b4 this one that i have had over 100,000 total minutes on. THis phone will go that distance, on a scale of 1-10 I give it an 8
have had this phone for a while now and hers what you NEED to hear...the ringer is not loud enough but it looks like others are saying there is a fix, I'll try that next, texting is terrible IMO, BLUETOOTH...i have yet to get a good headset to work with this phone, I personally use the Jawbone and it disconnects CONSTANTLY, and yes I have tried to "re pair " the device.., music player not very loud, and it definetly had a learning curve.
This phone has a lot of excellent features; the hardware is fantastic. The camera is 2+ Megapixels, the screen is clear, the capabilities are nice. What really makes the phone poor for most people is the usability. Many folks have mentioned that it has a "learning curve" which is really a failure in phone usability. There should not be a "learning curve" to use a phone. Some examples of the usability of this phone are in order.Consider first how to get to the main menu. On the screen there is no discernable way to get there. There is an icon with four dots, an arrow to the right - neither are comprehensible. Both take you to a menu - which is which and what for? Answer: four dots = main menu, arrow = user-definable menu. Clear? The main menu has more examples. At the menu there are four blocks (tabs??) off to the right; the phone icon and the gear icon are fairly obvious to modern users. However, the two in the middle are mostly incomprehensible to the first time viewer - and perhaps the longtime user. The first is (I presume) supposed to look like a clapboard from the golden age of film; it doesn't really. The icon with the three on it is almost entirely incomprehensible: after viewing the menu, I can only assume that it means "3rd party applications" since it has a "3" on it. What is the "3" sitting on? Have NO idea....The Multimedia menu is bad, too. Consider that there are no less than three different icons that English-speaking users will associate with music playback: "Music", "Shuffle", and "Audio". "Shuffle" has nothing to do with "Music", and "Audio" isn't "Music" either (got that?). In fact, "Shuffle" has nothing to do with listening to music at all (make sense? Didn't think so).Audio has to do with music FILES, although you can move, delete, copy, and rename all you want, you *cannot* play from this menu. One more usability problem that should be mentioned: the END touch key. If you are done with an application, and decide to press the END key to go back to the menu... Ooops. It doesn't "end" the application, the menu, or anything else: it actually means more like "abort" in that it takes you all the way back to the phone's main screen. The "end" or "done" button is in actuality the leftward arrow. And don't let's get started on the fact that this phone uses BREW instead of J2ME and the dearth of open source applications on the phone. If there was a way to wipe the software off the phone and reimage it with something like Linux or other open source environment with good usability and J2ME and open standards, it would be great.
This phone is GREAT. The only problem that I have is that now when I use other peoples phones, I assume theirs is touch screen also. I'm ADDICTED to this phone and it's awesome touch screen. Yes the ringer is somewhat quiet.. but there's a simple solution to fixing this people... Put your ringer to VIBRATE and RING at the same time.. so i f you can't here it you can always fell it in your pocket!
So stop whining about the volume because the rest of the phone is perfect.

THIS WAS THE BEST OR ONE OF THE BETTER PHONES ALLTEL HAS HAD I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Words cannot describe the frustration i have had with this phone... randomly muting while in conversation, microscopic side scroll bar, and lack of up-down-side to side navigational buttons made purchasing this phone (for close to retail value because i was just renewing my contract) a veryyy bad decision.
I figured i would eventually get used to it and with my busy schedule, i didnt have time to return to us cellular to get a different phone - with in a month i couldnt stand it anymore. i went to us cellular and got a LG flip phone - which i love. But not only did i have to pay almost full retail for the flip phone, i was unable to return my slider phone. So there's $300 down the drain. Hopefully someone will buy my glimmer as i have just posted it on craigslist.
Not sure about you guys but I have had the phone from the day it came out....the volumn problem was fixed with the update but on the new phones it is already updated. Someone below me mentioned the scroll being to small...I have big hands and can use my nail to scroll no problem...but they give you a stylus if you would rather use that....and you can always type the beginning letters into the phone to get to a certain name or section, but if you want to scroll you can also touch the bottom of the screen and sweep your finger or stylus upwards and it will send you list scrolling upwards, the faster you do it the further it goes before it stops.
The only issue I have with the phone is the speaker phone protion...I think the voices are a little distorted. Also when you are typing a message it does not have a predictive text that I have found. But that stuff is minor for all the features on this phone.
It is great in my opinion.
I am torn I love the features on this phone but I hate the fact that the phone volume is so low. I wish my carrier would get more touch screen phones but until they do I am stuck with this phone.
I am so excited i get this phone at the end of the month! It's really a gorgeous phone and i think all the people who say it's bad (theres only a handful thank God) Just have cell phone issues and expect too much out of a phone! Well i'm so excited to get mine aat the end of this month!
I have had so many phones & this is not one of my favorites.
I miss so many calls because I cannot hear the ringer. Don't even try to make a call in a hurry - can't do it...
It's bulky.
It's just not user friendly in my opinion.
The little bitty scroller on the side is almost worthless - too tiney to even use ....
I am not impressed with this phone at all.
Looks cool but looks are not better than functionality!
WoW! I got this phone two days ago when i upgraded my crappy kyocera E2000 tempo. I was sceptical when i read the reviews about this phone about how u cant use mp3s as ringtones. HOWEVER.....That only goes for alltell/verizon customers. US cellular offers that feature which i am proud to say is great. I dont need bitpim or anything...just a usb cord and my computer.
This is a hefty, sturdy phone. I feel like I can drop it a million times and still make a phone call with the touch screen.
This phone is pirced well and sleek. a lot of stop and gaze at it in the street. I didnt expect all the features it comes with. 1 hour video with recording light and flash for camera that has 2 megapixels, watch videos such as mp4s, listen to mp3s while browsing, bluetooth, voice recorder, physical buttons options slides out, unit converter, and of course the touchscreen.
this phone is the shit. and priced to sell.
ive had this phone for about a month now and i love it! compared to the other phones ive had the camera works great! i actually find the keypad very handy because for me id rather text with that over touching the screen fro every letter. at first i didnt think i would like the touch screen because it was hard to touch but i re-calibrated mine and now it is soo much easier! so far the only thing that bothers me is when it doesnt respond right away but otherwise i can truly say i love it!!
so I have had this phone for a few days now and for the most part I love it. the touch screen is awsome, I don't how I will turn back to a normal phone again. I love the big screen too. I like the build in music player also I wish you could use the down loaded song that I transfered from my PC for my ring tones. Its hard getting use to texting for me on this phone but I am sure I'll to use to it. I really don't have a problem with not hearing the ring????? I did notice that the phone gets really hot if your not to long. :( All in all I really like this phone.
when I began searching for a new phone my priorities were call strength/clarity, size(I carry it in my front pocket), and from there I wanted to also have the option of a camera and mp3 player. what I got with the Glimmer fits my needs very well.
using this phone the signal strength has always been excellent and the calls are clear, both what I hear and what others hear from me. have never experienced a dropped call. as this is what I actually needed the phone for(don't we all?) everything else has been gravy for me.
I like the feel of the phone. it's small without being dainty, with a very solid feel to it. it does have some heft to it, but when you consider the materials it's made of and the fact it doesn't fell like a brick in my pocket I hardley notice the weight and after this length of time using it, it all feels natural to me. the back of the phone is brushed metal, the sides rounded and smooth, the front composed of tempered glass. nice quality workmanship went into this phone and it doesn't feel fragile as so many others do (another reason I picked this phone as opposed to a clamshell which always seem to me close to breaking).
the slide is solid and the keyboard numbers have a good feel to them. I'll be honest and admit I never use the numbers, just another feature that is there if I ever need it but not obtrusive.
I like the interface of the phone. everything is intuitive and the learning curve small. the menus are easily navigated and this phone really does burst with features. now as stated by another post, if I really want to take pictures I'll use my digital camera....listen to songs I'll use my mp3 player..surfing the web a computer is best..you get the idea. but for those times I just want to click a few pics of something that just happened in front of me(who carrys a camera around all day?), or listen to some songs(or videos, or tv) while waiting for a flight,or look something up real quick on the web or navigation then this phone does all that without being bloated or big (remember size was a factor for me).
using the Glimmer for the web is just so-so...it's not html so the pages are in text, but again for me if I need that kind of web usage then I'll break out the laptop. but the phone is evdo so the pages load fast enough. the camera does take good photos with a slight lag while shooting. but you have options here with a 6 shot multishot which usually catches at least one perfect shot. other features such as white balance, resolution, etc round out the camera and like I said you can actually take some good shots without having to lug a camera around with you. at 2 mp the shots are keepers (yes some phones are 5mp or better today, but I also remember not too long ago when "regular" digital cameras were 3mp at best so this phone isn't bad). video camera is "not as good", but it has sound and considering it is in a cell phone I consider it a nifty little extra. use a micro sd card though for up to an hour of filming. the mp3 player is good but the sound without using earphones or bluetooth is not really that good(aggravating trying to listen to music or watching a south park episode...the use of earphones do help though).
what is probably the most aggravating issue of the phone is trying to assign ringtones. Alltel has crippled the Glimmer so that unless you buy THEIR ringtones you can't assign ringtones from your mp3s like other phones unless you are savy enough to use *cough* BitPim*cough*. which brings us to the ringer issue. initially when you get the phone it has a escalating ringer...it starts at a low volume and slowly increases in volume, but by the time you hear it the call has either ended or has gone to voice mail. if you take the phone to an Alltel store they can flash a software upgrade(version 06) that makes the ringer increase to full volume quickly. this improves the situation although I would still like the volume to be greater. increasing the volume during converting a ringtone also helps before transfering to phone is another option.
bottom line is are there better phones out there?...yes there are, as there are worse. for me, I got a phone that makes clear calls, is nifty and geeky enough to be cool, and has additional features that although are far from bleeding edge technology are good enough to fit the bill. I can listen to my favorite songs, switch to watching a full length movie, switch to tv and get the news, snap a few pics or video, surf the web for a local restaurant, use GPS navigation to find it, etc...etc..etc
now for the bad news......as most of you have heard a Verizon/Alltel merger is awaiting approval by the DOJ. how this will affect the Glimmer is unknown at this time(by most accounts it will have no impact at all)....but....it also appears that the Glimmer has been discontinued. no idea why, but from other forums it appears that what is in stock now is it...no additional Glimmers are being made and the stock should be exhausted by about October. this phone fits nicely between cheaper phones you get for your kid and the higher end smartphones that road warriors need. I like this phone and until it's dead or I'm forced to buy a different phone I will continue to use it...it fits my needs.
Wow I hate it when people compare the features of this phone to the iPhone. This is a good phone with a slight learning curve. It takes awhile to get used to the slightly awkward multimedia features and things like scrolling but I personally think that it better looking and more useful that most other phones on the market. I LOVE the touch screen. Its so futuristic they it almost feels like the screen is forming buttons. For the most part navigating menus it quite fast and selecting music and videos is a snap. The physical keyboard is a nice feature i just wish that it could have been put to better use for things like navigating menus for scrolling or something. I know on most phones Bluetooth is a standard feature but some, such as the iPhone, don't have it. I got one cheap so even if i had AT&T i wouldn't pick anything else. I don't think it made anyone switch carriers but this is a solid phone.
Ok, I don't change cell phones often so anything new would probably impress me, but so far after a month of the Glimmer, I'm very happy with it. The touch screen is a great feature. Everything is right at my fingertips. I believe it is very intuitive to set up and use. I like the option of having multiple numbers for one single contact. (Maybe that feature has been available for a while but for me coming from an older phone, this has been a huge plus to be able to just look up "Cindy" and choose which of the four numbers to call than to scroll through all the "Cindys" that I had before.)
The camera is sufficient for a cell phone. If I want great pics, that's what my digital camera is for, not the cell phone. Videos are also sufficient. Again, if I'm really doing video, I don't do that with my phone. The mp3 is good and extra memory card works well. I haven't tried any of the web connection options. I want to get away from the internet some of the time. If I did that on my phone, I'd be connected all the time.
I almost didn't get the Glimmer with all the reviews of the ringer being an issue. Frankly, I just don't find that to be a problem. I haven't missed a call yet. Maybe the next time I'm standing by the train track with a train going by I'll be cussing cause I missed an important phone call since my phone should be heard over a train!!! (just joking folks). Seriously, it hasn't been a problem for me and I'm glad I got the phone despite people's opinion on the ringer.
Also, the key pad has been handy when I was out in the sun and it was hard to see from the touch pad. Having the key pad allowed for me to put in the number. Even though I don't use it much, it's great to know that it is there.
This phone is miles above my old phone (I'd be too embarrassed to say what I had) so I am just tickled pink. And, since I'm content, it doesn't look like I'll be upgrading soon so the price it not out of line. Buy a cheap phone and that's what you will get. This one is rugged with a metal case. Get the screen protector or cover though. You'll be glad you did.
Very nice phone media is excellent and web browser is eh..You dumb dumbs the keypad is for if the touchscreen can not respond...Let's say it doesn't like you and doesn't work OO WHAT NOW if you didnt have a keypad your screwed..Also bluetooth is ok.Ringer problem will be fixed shortly i think alltel plans to make a update. rating is now
8.5/10
I love this phone. The features are so easy to use and very convenient. Some say the ringer is too soft, so I kept scrolling through the ring tones and chose the loudest one I could find, and that one is plenty loud. I used to have a different ring tone for each caller, and unfortunately, I won't be able to do that anymore. Other than that, this is the best phone I've ever owned, and I've had a cell phone since the "old days".
So I had this phone already for a couple of days now, and I have to say that it is definitely worth the money. Excellent multimedia, fast, nice keypad, great touchscreen interface, looks good, good camera, but most importantly takes great calls. I really highly recommend this phone to everyone.
