Excellent Phone

Phone owned for less than a year

I've never owned an Apple product before. I ran into the Apple and Verizon stores with no idea what to expect from a either of them, and came out genuinely interested in the iPhone. My apologies to Android die-hards, but I'm not a phone "power-user" and I'm not really concerned with free software and open source.

The phone itself is beautiful - polished glass and stainless steel band give it a very classy, high quality look. Simply holding it gives the impression of a superior product. The interface is fluid and responds instantly, and is very natural and easy to use - I figured it out after only a few minutes in the store. Everything is easily accessible without having to dig through multiple menus.

The apps are brilliant. News, media, Facebook, etc are all available at the tap of your finger, and all work blazingly fast with little to no loading time. Folders are extremely convenient and help to organize all my crap, and the multitasking comes in handy, especially when I feel like listening to Pandora while playing a game or surfing the web.

My impression: the iPhone is what it is. Like a 1960 Chrysler Imperial, you either love it or hate it, with no in between. I'm extremely content with it for now, and appreciate it even more after also giving Android a shot for a few weeks. I must say that the 4 is the way to go with a smartphone.

slight improvement

Phone owned for less than a month

Im sorry but I cant understand why all of you fan boys love this phone. In every new release apple releases a few small features that should have came with the first generation. Its ridiculous the amount of money apple is squeezing out of this phone. It is a great phone but they are behind on may features, and this antenna issue drives me crazy. You think they would have put this phone through enough testing to find this issue but no, it would have cost them money. This phone is far from the best, with limited customization, and without apps it would be nothing and I can get most of the same apps on other phones. This is my last iPhone purchase because honestly i feel robbed. Hopefully apple can catch up eventually and maybe then i will consider it again.

Disappointing Phone!

Phone owned for

I've owned an iPhone 3G and an iPhone 3GS prior to the iPhone 4 so lest someone accuse me of bias either for or against the iPhone,  you would be incorrect.

Overall, the iPhone 4 represents a few advantages over previous models but unfortunately the negatives overshadow it.

First, the good.  The form function is the nicest of any wireless device I've ever used.  Apple's Safari browser is still the best in the business, and retina display makes the screen display really pop out.  Also, apps-a-plenty are available through the App Store.

Now for the bad.  The new glass back on the iPhone 4 is very easy to break compared to the plastic back of previous iPhones.  The battery life, although better than previous models, is still short and the battery is still not removable.  The call quality is spotty mainly due to AT&T's rather poor coverage and service but this will be subject to change when other carriers like Verizon get a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 this January.  Finally, there is the well-publicized issues with the antenna.  Excuse me for not being an Apple fanboy, but a free case is not the fix I had in mind for this issue and strikes me as somewhat of a copout for Apple and an insult to the intelligence of its customers.  And E-mail setup is still clunky and difficult.  The folks at Apple need to study why RIM is still the king of the hill in this department and make the appropriate produce improvements.

As a result of my iPhone 4 fiasco I returned mine for a refund and said goodbye to Apple and to AT&T.  I have an HTC Evo 4G now and I'm much more satisfied with the call quality and although that phone has some issues of its own, none of them are as glaring or as significant as those on the iPhone 4.  I am hoping and do expect that Apple will fix this with its next iteration of the iPhone, as the Lords of Cupertino continue to lose market share because of a poor design and indifferent customer response.

iPhone 4 = near perfection!

Phone owned for

I dont understand at all why the iPhone 4's user rating is only 6.6. It should be 9.5 like Phone Arena reviewers gave it. This phone is almost perfect, as nothing a human makes will ever be perfect.  I have not had one problem with my iPhone 4. There is no "antennagate" or proximity sensor problem with my iPhone. People who review this product should own one before writing negatively about it.

Iphone 4 ain't worth the hype unless you're a blind fan boy.

Phone owned for

I'm one of the lucky few who have both an HTC Desire and IPhone 4 so I get to see both sides of each device and let me tell you, people that are rating this phone as high as they are, are highly delusional fanboys.

Firstly, the Iphone is a phone.  If it fails to be able to act in it's primary task properly, there's a problem. It shouldn't need an addon if I can' pull it out of the box and make call without wrapping it in rubber/plastic first, it's a critical design flaw.  Understandable that *some* people's IP4's worked fine, mine had issues that's for sure.  My HTC, worked as expected.

Secondly, the Ip4 is just the same as the 3g.  Oh it's got a flat back now, big deal, I actually found the curved back made the phone sit better in my hand.

New screen, yes I freely admit the screen is a beaut, very sharp, very clear, but it's STILL only 3.5".  Really Apple?  My HTC which also sports a very nice screen does 4" and let me tell you, reading/writing emails, using the web, photo's etc that extra bit of real estate is not nice to have it's a requirement.

The camera is OK, nothing to jump up and down about, SE still hold that crown over both Apple and HTC.  The front facing camera is a complete waste of time.  Video ain't bad, some contrast issues with it make it a pain trying to use in and out of shade when outside.  Also doesn't do action unless you're after blurry blobs.

Web.... Flash.  Seriously.   HTC wins hands down both in terms of compatibility and oh yes the HTC has 4" screen.

Notifications..... cmon Apple, when oh WHEN will you sort these out?  HTC plain and simple works,  if I don't want to deal with email, text, calendar they disappear quietly into the taskbar.  What they don't do is lock up the phone until I deal with them.

I really think Apple missed the boat with this, incrementally increasing the features over an 18 month release cycle, the OS still needs a LOT of work, things like the notifications, exchange email and multitasking feel very beta still.

Android is just rampaging ahead with their OS and it's leaving Apple looking like they're designing  their phone for the mentally challenged.  The Martket is quickly becoming equally as useful as the App Store, and the level of customisation with Android makes you even more annoyed with Apple's 'hand holding'.

HTC banging out phones every other month cheaper, of solid build quality and with equal or better options, the Desire HD looks amazing.  Samsung's Galaxy S is already superior.  The Iphone 4 is a case of 2 steps forward 1 step back, and there's so many better choices that are skipping ahead.

The Best Iphone yet!!!!!!!!!

Phone owned for

I bought my phone on launch day coming from a 3gs.  I had already downloaded ios 4 on my 3gs so I figured that it wouldn't be that much different.  I bought it anyway because of the new design. But I have been totally blown away with this phone.  The speed you don't notice because the 3gs was fast but when you compare to the 3gs the speed is faster.  The camera is amazing and the flash just makes it better.  I used the video recorder for the first time Saturday and I am beyond impressed.  I don't know anyone else with an ip4 so I have not done facetime yet.  Looking forward to that.  But the most impressive thing yet is the Retina Display.  It is the sharpest clearest screen I have ever seen.  Even my desktop and definitely my netbook can not compare.  The screen is so beautiful that I surf the web on my phone just to look at how beautiful the images are.  This alone is worth the price of the phone.
I have had no problems with the phone dropping calls.  I am in a good area for att wireless.Which I think is the key to how your phone works.  In other words it is not the phone but Att.  I feel like I get better reception with the ip4 because where I did have spotty coverage I now have no problem.  Apple hit on something when they put the antennae on the outside just need to put a coating on the black strips.  I generally have five bars three at the most.  Those rare times when I have went down to one bar I still get fast data speeds and since owning the phone I have had three drop calls which I can't be sure if it was my phone or the other person's.  From day one I put my expensive phone in a case.  I used my old 3gs case until I could get one for phone.  Not because of the antennae issue but because I wanted to protect my phone.  No spotting what so ever.  A little issue with the ps but I use a bluetooth or headphones the majority of the time anyway.  Some bluetooth issues just had to find one that worked with the phone.  I can't update yet because I am jailbroken but I understand those issues are resolved with the update.
Overall a great phone. There maybe other phones on the market that do more than the iphone 4 but I don't think  they do it as smoothly and easy.  The iphone 4 just does it right all the time.  Without hassle or fuss.  Which is what I want for my phone.

THE BEST PHONE OUT

Phone owned for

I love my iPhone 4. I don't know why everyone seems to be having bad reception and dropped calls. I have never had a problem with my phone yet. Every call is crystal clear. I had the 3gs before I got the 4 and I can tell that there is a difference between the accuracy of the keyboards on each. The iPhone 4 must have revamped the keyboard because it is so much more accurate than my 3gs. I absolutely love the flash on the phone. If you leave it on Auto it always takes a good picture. It will only use the flash if it is absolutely neccessary. I took a picture in complete darkness and it looked amazingly clear. The phone looks like a million bucks. The glass screen is beautiful. Safari is outrageously quick. Its ridiculous how fast you can search the web. Overall I love my phone. The best facebook app you can get is on an iPhone also...LOVE IT.

I love it.

Phone owned for

I love everything about this phone except the reception - IT COULD BE BETTER! I am not sure weather it is AT&T or the phone itself. I wish it was on T-Mobile - they had good 2G coverage - not sure about 3G with them- although HSPA+ is out? Any way i give it a 10 all arround but reception.

IPhone 4 is Hard to Beat....

Phone owned for

I held out buying an IPhone for 2 years because I wanted a physical keyboard.  After I made the change over a year ago, I don't really miss the keyboard because of the touchscreen working so well with the IPhone.Phone reception is pretty poor....  I haven't tried a different phone with ATT long enough to see if I am in a bad area or it truly being the phone but it drops quite a bit of calls. The phone has a great display, great camera / video (with a flash finally!!!), very smooth and clean interface.  Browser is impossible to beat no matter what anyone says.  I have tried new Blackberry Torch, Palm Pre, Droid, and Samsung Captivate and none come close to being as fluid, smooth, or fast with the web browser.  The multi tasking is not very good.  I am not sure if that has more to do with the app makers needing to update or Apple but it really doesn't multi task much different than before but does a little.  Apps still need to reload completely even if they are already open in your open app area.  Very few don't need to reload.  They also need to figure out a way to close apps simpler rather than having to get out of app, then get back in to the open apps, then hold down the app, then close it........  There needs to be some easier way than a 4 step process to close an app.  I really like Palm WebOs interface but they need a bigger screen and all the updates that come with the new phones and I would probably get one.The main reason I try every new phone that comes out is for the notification system.  Apple needs to do a new update hopefully sooner than June of 2011 with a new notification system.  I can't stand having to do something with each notification before you can do anything else with the phone.  They just need to put them in a little app box or something and that would make it loads better.  If I pick up my phone and want to use it real quick to make a call and I have 3 text messages, 2 calendar events, and an alarm, I have to close each one or do something with it before I can even make a call and then if I close them down I forget about them.  So if they just did something like everyone else (Palm, Android, Blackberry) and put them into a notifications area, it would make a world of difference.Even with the 2 main negatives I have with the phone, I still stay loyal to Apple until someone else can come up with something better.

Awesome phone

Phone owned for

I have absolutely no issues with the phone. It is the best phone I've had and I've had a lot of phones: Pre, iphone 3g, Blackberry's, and the droid incredible. They were all good phones, except maybe the Pre, but I'm more of an iphone person. The screen rocks; there is so much clarity and the touch screen is the best; it is the smoothest of all the touch phones. It performs well and I have not had any signal problems. Much better than the 3g.

Iphone out of date

Phone owned for

Iphone is good, but a little late. Its trying to show off its multi-tasking feauter and yet, android phones have had that.
I think the face time is a really cool feature, and i think all smartphones should have that. But again, its still late, Apple had the chance to add flash to this phone this go around, yet, no flash player. Android on the otherhand is getting flash sometime at the end of the summer. So weve heard.

All in all, i think if the Apple And Android put thier OS together, they would have an unstoppable phone. But lets not lie to ourselves, not going to happen.

Best iPhone Yet

Phone owned for

Antenna:I have tested the antenna problem and it exists. However, due to the way I naturally hold the phone, signal strength degradation isn't an issue for me. Although this will vary by user and how they naturally hold the phone. Design:Out of all the phones I have ever owned, this is by far the most beautiful. I am going to risk going without a bumper or case so that it doesn't take away from the beauty of this phone (though I did buy insurance). The phone feels very solid in your hand and the stainless steel band goes well in between the two pieces of glass. My only fear is dropping this phone even once would shatter the screen, but I bought insurance for just a scenario. Display:The screen is incredible. Everything is vibrant and it is impossible for me to discern individual pixels. My eyes would start hurting when I put my phone close to my eyes to try and see each pixel. Although I would have preferred a bump in screen size, the quality is enough to keep me pleased. People will definitely notice a difference when comparing this phone to any other.Camera:Apple made the right decision in going with the sensor instead of megapixels. Pictures come out amazingly almost all the time (95% ish). This has completely replaced my point and shoot camera (which still shot better pictures, naturally) because it produces pictures of high quality. HD video recording is good as well, although the audio is not as loud as I would have wanted it to be. The front facing camera is less megapixels (about 0.3 I think) and other than for FaceTime and seeing if you have something stuck in your teeth, isn't that great. FaceTime went smoothly when I had a strong WiFi signal and I was surprised by the quality. Not as good as video chatting over Skype but still very good. Also, taking pictures is INSANELY quick, quicker than on any phone I have used. Although with flash, the time to take a picture is increased. Speed:You probably won't notice a difference in speed of the phone but it exists, especially in games. While in certain games (on my 3GS) it would slow down while performing certain actions, the iPhone 4 does not. Battery/Multitasking:There is a definite improvement in battery life over previous generations. Usually by the end of the day, I would have about 20% left on my phone from heavy use. But now, I have about 35%-40% left. I am not the only one that uses my phone, since my co-workers all like to play games on it during random times throughout the day. Apple incorporated their own version of multitasking and it truly is a great implementation. My friends who have the droid all have crappy battery life due to all the processes they have running, but with the iPhone 4, Apple manages all processes efficiently. Quick app switching is awesome for gamers. Conclusion:This is the best phone I have owned. While I was not able to address everything, it is good for my needs, which are: texting, email, web browsing, games, taking pictures/videos, watching movies, listening to music, chatting, etc. The only thing I would like to see in the next iPhone is a bump in screen size, other than that, this phone fits my needs perfectly.
