One small step for Apple, one smartphone leap for humanity: the first-ever foldable iPhone, called the iPhone Duo, is now officially here.
September 9, 2026 will go down in history as the day Apple parted with the old and stepped into a new era. Tim Cook has passed the CEO baton onto John Ternus and his first move is to announce a brand-new, foldable iPhone Duo.
Regardless of whether this is a hit or miss, whether it's an absurdly priced or sanely priced device, or whether it's a "good" or "bad" smartphone, I'm just glad that Apple has finally stepped into the foldable realm.
I'm a big believer in foldables but without Apple offering its own foldable iPhone Duo, the party wouldn't be as fun.

The first thing that can be said about the iPhone Duo is that it's got that hot and beloved wider-than-taller aspect ratio. Call it a passport phone, if you like.

Android fans are correct to point out that both the new iPhone Duo and the aforementioned Galaxy Z Fold 8 resemble the Pura X Max by Huawei which arrived months earlier. But given how cold recent US administrations have been towards Huawei—and thanks to their sanction efforts—it's safe to say that US consumers no longer (or aren't allowed to) pay attention to Huawei phones in any shape or form.

One buys a foldable for its inner display. That's it. The hinge, the bragging rights wow factor, the fancy outer display: that's all secondary.
The Apple iPhone Duo looks like it comes with a minimal crease, but the more important question is, how deep will that crease get in the coming weeks, months or even years? Obviously, this is a question that will be answered in time, not today.
It's safe to say that Apple's first-ever foldable iPhone hasn't arrived with a deep crease. But that's nothing to write home about, since in 2026, virtually all foldables come with pretty shallow creases.
More importantly, the new phone comes with a special nano-texture finish that "minimizes glare for an unparalleled viewing experience", which is always welcome. Furthermore, the outer 5.4-inch display is more than 80% larger compared to the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.
Because both screens have the same aspect ratio, content scales naturally and looks consistent on either display.
The iPhone Duo pairs a Grade 5 titanium frame with a mirror-polished finish and a precision 100-component hinge for a smooth, structural fold, Apple says. The exterior is protected by updated Ceramic Shield glass that triples scratch resistance. Inside, there's a nano-textured cover layer and a flexible dual-glass construction with a bottom titanium plate to protect the folding screen from wear and tear.

The new iPhone Duo is powered by a 2-nanometer chip titled A20 Pro. There's a custom vapor chamber and an enhanced thermal cooling system. Apple says it delivers up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple isn't pulling any punches and says the new 6-core CPU is the fastest in any smartphone, while a 7-core GPU boosts graphics speed by 40%. To further stun you, Apple has put a dual 16-core Neural Engine for 50% higher memory bandwidth to double its AI processing power for complex tasks and heavy gaming.
Since this is a foldable, there are dual high-energy batteries on each side of the frame. We'll be testing the iPhone Duo when we have it in our PhoneArena lab, but Apple says this setup offers up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen… or 44 hours on the outer display. Fast charging gets you back up to 50% battery in 20 minutes (wired). For extra versatility, besides the side Touch ID, users will be able to unlock this phone with their Apple Watch. Finally, there's a physical Camera Control button that launches the camera instantly and Apple Pencil support is coming later in the year.

The foldable iPhone Duo packs the familiar, but slightly revamped 48 MP Fusion main camera. Apple says users can take shots at up to 48 MP resolution with "zero shutter lag". The default capture is 24 MP. The main camera also promises a new, fancy computational image pipeline for sharper details and it's claimed to excel in low light.
The 48 MP Fusion ultra-wide camera is the same as on the new iPhone 18 Pro models. The selfie camera on the top display packs that cool Center Stage square-shaped sensor so you can take photos and videos in any orientation without having to rotate the phone in landscape.
The inner display hides a new FaceTime camera underneath it. This camera "stays hidden when not in use to keep the screen uninterrupted", Apple says.
The new foldable design unleashes some cool dual-screen camera tricks you won't find on traditional iPhones. Using the outer display, you can snap crisp selfies with the main rear lenses, preview shots live with Duo Preview, and let extra people join video calls seamlessly with Duo FaceTime. Meanwhile, smart features powered by the A20 Pro chip take over shutter duty: Smart Take uses AI to snap photos automatically when everyone is posed, and Kid Cue plays fun animations on the front screen to keep young kids looking right at the lens.
In terms of video, the iPhone Duo supports 4K120 fps recording in Dolby Vision on the 48 MP main camera.
Where's the telephoto?!

The iPhone Duo has two cameras on its back: one main and one ultra-wide. As the multiple rumors have been suggesting for months prior to today's unveiling, the foldable iPhone doesn't have a dedicated telephoto snapper. The main camera has that "2x optical-quality telephoto" label attached to it, but that's inferior to a true optical zoom snapper.
Not having a dedicated telephoto is a bummer. OK, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 doesn't sport a dedicated telephoto, too, but the Honor Magic V6 comes with a 64 MP 3x optical zoom camera. So, it's not that this stunt can't be pulled off, it's just that Apple and Samsung are a bit… lazy about it.
iOS 27 made for the iPhone Duo
As you can guess, iOS 27 is specifically optimized for the foldable iPhone Duo. This means adapting layout elements like Lock Screen controls and the Dock to the side to maximize screen space.
Opening the device reveals two side-by-side Home Screen pages alongside a scrolling widget view, a flexible status bar, and a redesigned vertical Dynamic Island for alerts. Content adjusts automatically as you fold, turn or flip the phone, with built-in and third-party apps like Zoom and Slack redesigned to take full advantage of the larger canvas.
Multitasking gets a boost in Split View, too, letting you run two apps or Safari windows side by side. The StandBy mode now works anywhere without requiring a charger, transforming either screen into a customizable display for widgets, clocks, weather and photos.
The new Siri AI is utilizing Apple Intelligence to understand personal context, read on-screen content, draft text and sync private chat history across your Apple devices. Apple Intelligence also introduces tools like Spatial Reframing for photo edits, AI image generation with watermarking detection and Safari page-monitoring alerts.

The new iPhone Duo (Apple's first-ever foldable device) starts at $1,999. It's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but at least it's not $2,500, like some rumors predicted. If you want the 2 TB version, you'll have to pay the staggering amount of $3,199.
