Sony's IFA 2019 teaser keeps our Xperia 2 Compact hopes alive
The Xperia 1 is one tall beast

Without Samsung, the IFA trade show in Berlin has been lacking some of the glamour of the good old days in the last few years. It looks like the 2019 edition will be no exception, as the Galaxy Note 10, Note 10+, Galaxy Watch Active 2, and even Galaxy Tab S6 all broke cover long before the official start of the European tech shindig.

Of course, there are still plenty of high-profile mobile product announcements happening in the next week or so to be excited about, including the launch of a mystery Sony device promising to bring the "Xperia excellence" in the "palm of your hand." That sounds an awful lot like a compact variant of the extra-tall, extra-large Xperia 1, but all previous signs appeared to point to a so-called Xperia 2 with a 6.1-inch display.

That's not exactly "palm of your hand" material, especially based on the rumored dimensions accompanying the first visual leak way back in May. According to the always reliable Steve Hemmerstoffer, aka @OnLeaks, the Xperia 2 should measure 158 x 68.3 x 8.3mm, which is (unsurprisingly) considerably taller, slightly narrower, and also slightly thicker than, say, Samsung's 5.8-inch Galaxy S10e.

Meanwhile, 2018's Xperia XZ2 Compact came with not just a much smaller 5-inch screen and horrendously thick bezels, but overall measurements of 135 x 65 x 12.1mm as well. At the same time, it's worth pointing out that Sony has a long tradition of unveiling more than one product at once, so perhaps the company's September 5 event in Berlin will see both the Xperia 2 and Xperia 2 Compact unwrapped. Or maybe we're reading too much into an Instagram teaser that simply hints at a slightly smaller Xperia 1 edition and what was initially expected to be branded as the Xperia 2 will ultimately go official under a label like Xperia 1S.

Either way, if the 6.5-inch Xperia 1 felt interesting but cumbersome, you should probably keep an eye on Sony's IFA 2019 livestream.
