We recently
reported that Samsung is going to release an update for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, that, among other things, contains improvements to the divisive AR Emoji platform. The update is now live and we have an official Samsung blog post that goes over the improvements introduced to the 3D emoji characters.
Among the new features, there's improved facial tracking, as well as fresh, new customization options that allow users to make virtual avatars that better resemble their looks. The knack of AR Emoji is that it automatically turns your mug into a 3D character, but since results vary in accuracy, the latest update introduces a new
My Emoji Editor feature, which provides simple tools to fine-tune various facial features of your avatar.
How long until AR Emoji become the new Miis and people start sharing their utterly bizarre creations on social media? Not long, we think.
The new update also improves AR Emoji face-tracking, with a 65 percent increase in
“landmark detector” points, according to Samsung. In other words, this will help the 3D characters more accurately track the position of your head, eyes, and mouth. And last, but not least, there's a frame rate boost that will make AR Emoji grimace smoother than ever on your screen.
