Polar has two new GPS multisport watches for professional athletes and wannabe pros
It’s probably not very wise to unveil a wearable device mere hours after the latest generation of the world’s number one watch (no, not just smartwatch), but then again, Polar obviously has no intention to compete directly against Apple.
A veteran of the sports training market, the company tried its hand at a modern Android Wear smartwatch a couple of years ago, returning closer to its roots with the Polar Vantage V and Vantage M GPS “multisport” watches today.
These are certainly not your typical Apple Watch rivals, snubbing Wear OS, lacking most of the features desired by smartphone users looking for a versatile companion, while truly excelling when it comes to health tracking and training optimization.
Professional athletes, as well as those training like pros, can get pretty much everything they need from the $549 and up Polar Vantage V, including something called Recovery Pro, which monitors the balance between training and recovery to recommend different types of workouts at different stages in a user’s preparation towards achieving various goals.
Basically, this watch can tell when you need to slow down or take a break to avoid injuries, also encouraging you to do better and train harder if your body can take it.
For your 550 bucks, you also get a 1.2-inch always-on color touch display with 240 x 240 resolution and Gorilla Glass protection, as well as a relatively large battery rated at up to 40 hours of endurance in “training mode”, with both the GPS and heart rate monitor continuously on.
The $279.95 Polar Vantage M is understandably more modest, with a non-touch color display in tow, significantly smaller battery, and no barometer making the Running Power functionality possible.
But for a “slim and lightweight training companion”, this has plenty of neat stuff going for it, from built-in GPS technology to wrist-based heart rate tracking, numerous training optimization methods, sleep monitoring, and even interchangeable bands.
Polar Vantage M and Vantage V pre-orders are underway now, with deliveries scheduled to begin sometime in November.

Running Power is another advanced technology unique to the Vantage V, using GPS and barometer data to complement the gadget’s heart rate monitor, helping you maintain a steady effort level during a long run.
