Samsung just announced its new Galaxy S23 lineup. And although the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra look almost the same as their predecessors, they are considerably better. For example, the Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with a whopping 200MP main camera, which should take better photos than the 108MP one on the S22 Ultra. But probably the biggest upgrade to the new S23 series is the chipset.
All phones in the Galaxy S23 lineup are powered by the all-new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy silicon, which is an overclocked version of the vanilla Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and is "the fastest Snapdragon ever," according to Qualcomm
The Galaxy S23 really sounds like a phone you would like if you enjoy playing mobile games. Thanks to its upgraded GPU, the chipset of the S23 supports real-time hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which enhances the in-game light, reflections, and illuminations in supported games — like Wreckfest, for example — making them more realistic.
Samsung's new S23 lineup also comes with a Snapdragon Game Post Processing Accelerator, which improves performance and adds effects like bloom, depth of field, and motion blur. The S23 also supports the Unreal Engine 5 Metahumans Framework, which makes in-game characters more lifelike.
In addition to an enhanced gaming experience, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy also improves the Galaxy S23's camera. The latest addition to the S-series is the world's first smartphone to utilize Snapdragon's Cognitive Image Signal Processor to enable real-time Semantic Segmentation. This is a technology that lets the Galaxy S23's camera recognize individual elements within a frame and then improve them separately while you are using the camera.
For example, by using the Semantic Segmentation technology, the camera can smooth skin or enhance the readability of the text in a book. Thanks to its upgraded chipset, the Galaxy S23 series also utilizes ultra-low-light video capture and multi-frame noise reduction.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy is even smarter than the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The Galaxy S23's silicon includes Qualcomm's latest AI Engine and Sensing Hub and comes with dual AI processors, which enable on-device AI experiences like echo cancelling and noise cancellation during calls.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy comes with the Snapdragon X70 5G Modem-RF System and Qualcomm's 5G AI Processor and uses AI to provide faster and more reliable 5G connectivity. The S23 lineup can also support two 5G SIMs at once. All S23 phones also come with Qualcomm's FastConnect 6900 and 7800 systems, which deliver fast Wi-Fi speeds with low latency.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy definitely sounds impressive. And the best news is that this year, you will be able to get a Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S23, S23+, or S23 Ultra wherever you are in the world. As for when you will be able to get your new Galaxy S23 smartphone, Samsung stated that the S23 lineup will hit the shelves in the US on February 17th. Prices will start at $799.99 for the S23, $999.99 for the S23+, and $1199.99 for the S23 Ultra.
But how much better is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy compared to the regular version? Well, the silicon made for Samsung has an upgraded prime CPU core and GPU. Also, Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy is more power efficient compared to the vanilla Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 silicon.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 | |
---|---|---|
prime CPU core | clocked at 3.36GHz | clocked at 3.2GHz |
Adreno 740 GPU | clocked at 719MHz | clocked at 680MHz |
