Up Periscope! Twitter testing dedicated Periscope button on Android version of Twitter

4comments

A new button added to the Android version of Twitter allows users to start "broadcasting" live from within the app. All you need to do is tap the "Go Live" button on Twitter, and you are streaming in real time using Periscope. Owned by Twitter, Periscope allows you to broadcast live video streams to all of your Twitter contacts. If you don't yet have the Periscope app, tapping on the "Go Live" button on Twitter takes you to the Google Play Store, from where you can quickly install the Periscope app.

Keeping Periscope separate from Twitter has both helped and hurt the app. Doing this has allowed Periscope to have its own identity and personality. It also has allowed Periscope to have its own user base that has nothing to do with Twitter. The downside is that this has kept Twitter from offering a single "live broadcast" button on Twitter. That is, until now.

The "Go Live" button is rolling out at this moment to a limited number of Twitter users employing the Android app. Eventually, the feature will be made available to those running the iOS version of the Twitter app.
