Owners of the BlackBerry Storm 9530 will have reason to celebrate on Sunday if a screenshot posted by Erictric is correct. The shot appears to be for internal Verizon use and says that starting Sunday, October 25th, owners of the BlackBerry Storm 9530 can upgrade to OS build 5.0.0.328. There are two ways to do this. One is to go to the computer and upgrade directly from the internet at www.blackberry.com/storm/updates and customers are notified directly by the Desktop Manager (version 4.7 or higher, or the Mac version) when connecting the device. Or, customers can go to www.verizonwireless.com/storm or www.vzam.net.blackberry to upgrade. There is no OTA update with this OS build. All of the user's data will be backed up and restored during the process, and third party apps will be saved.
The new OS will give the first-gen Storm owners all of the software features that will be found in the upcoming Storm2 9550. Thinks like Flick scrolling, improved browser, threaded texting, faster camera loading, quicker launching of apps and faster orientation changes are all part of the new OS. Will the software improvement be enough to keep potential buyers of the Storm2 holding on to the first-gen model instead? The only differences will between the two versions are expected to be the improved SurePress typing system, the addition of Wi-Fi, and some design changes.
*UPDATE* Engadget Mobile has a leaked photo of some Verizon material aimed at Storm owners, discussing tomorrow's OS upgrade. The upgrade will be available starting at 6pm EDT tomorrow. Some interesting new features of the upgrade include auto word correction in landscape as opposed to word completion. While no mention of flick scrolling was in the material, those who have used a leaked OS build very close to the one that Big Red will release tomorrow, say that it is in the new OS. Overall, Storm owners will feel like they have a brand new phone after Sunday's upgrade.
