Twitter suffers extended outage on Tuesday morning

If you had trouble sending or receiving tweets earlier today, you weren't alone. Twitter suffered what was described as a "major interruption" Tuesday in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. While the service has returned to normal, the Twitter website says, "Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter. We are aware of the issue and are working toward a resolution."

According to monitoring site Down Detector, the outage started at 8:27am London time (3:27am EST in the states) and ran for more than two-hours. That followed some problems that Twitter users experienced on both the mobile and Web platforms on Monday, when service was down for a 10-minute period. It is not known whether that problem is related to today's outage.

Down Detector says that 49% of the outage reports came from the Twitter website while 30% came from the Apple iPad Twitter app. The remaining 21% of the complaints were reported via Twitter's Android app.
