The adoption rate of iOS 8 hits 72%, iOS 7 now powering "merely" 25% of Apple's devices
Some of you might remember that only a few days after Apple opened the gates and released iOS 8 to the world, the adoption rate of this rendition of Apple's mobile OS had already made its way to 46% of all iOS devices that supported it. Of course, the reason for this high rate of initial adoption is the almost non-existent fragmentation over at Cupertino's camp, where one can currently find almost zero reasons for discontent.
The newest data from Apple reveals that the current adoption iOS 8, the newest version of which rolled out just recently, now stands at 72%. Its predecessor, iOS 7, can be found on 25% of Apple's devices (iPhones, iPads, and iPods combined). The remainder of 3% are distributed between previous versions of Apple's OS. These stats, as usual, are automatically measured by Apple's App Store.
As a side comparison, just a day or two ago we told you that Android 5.0 Lollipop can be found on 1.6% of all Android devices as per February 2. The reason for this is the fragmentation of the platform. KitKat, the previous Android flavor, is the current king in the castle, as it can be found on 39.7% of all Android devices.
Back to iOS 8's adoption rate, it's almost sure that it will reach its peak sometime in late summer, when Apple is traditionally expected to reveal its newest hardware and software. As a reminder, just before iOS 8 arrived, iOS 7 could be found on roughly 90% of Cupertino's devices. Thus, it is quite logical that iOS 8 will reach similar adoption rates.
