The A-list: 9 phones that have a better battery life than the Samsung Galaxy Note5

45comments

Although the Galaxy Note5 surprised most with its way better than average battery life. Due to one reason or another, the 3,000mAh juicer at the rear of the Note5 ekes out more battery life than a large host of other popular devices flaunting batteries that are equal or even larger in capacity. Indeed, Samsung put the kibosh on our suspicions that the Note5 might be a bit underperforming than its predecessor, the Note 4, in terms of battery life given that it comes with a battery that is 220mAh smaller.

With a result of 9 hours and 11 minutes in our custom battery benchmark test that is tailored to mimic real-life usage as good as possible, the Note5 leaves worthy rivals like the Nexus 6, ZenFone 2, Meizu MX4, Note Edge, and LG G4, not to mention all other phones that are not as well-endowed in the battery department, like the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, Galaxy S6, S6 edge, HTC One M9, and many, many others.

Yet, what are the phones that are better-performing than the Note5 in the battery department? Here are some of the phones that are superior than the Note4 in terms of endurance and battery stamina.

Nokia Lumia 830

2,200mAh battery | 9h 19min

The mid-range Lumia device that was announced at last year's IFA in Berlin boasts "merely" a 2,200mAh battery under its hood, it overlaps the Note5 by a slight margin. The reason for this are most certainly the not-so power-hungry internals of the phone - this Windows-running handsets is powered by a Snapdragon 400 and a 720p display.

Sony Xperia M2

2,300mAh | 9h 19min

The Sony Xperia M2, just like the Lumia 830 we mentioned above, is an entry-level phone from early 2014 capable of enduring for 9 hours and 19 minutes. Well, it's pretty humble in its specs sheet.

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+

3,000mAh | 9h 29 min

The supersized Galaxy S6 edge might be sporting the same battery and hardware internals as the Note5, it lasted a bit more in our benchmark test. 18 additional minutes, to be exact, which is by no means unworthy of mentioning.

Sony Xperia Z3

3,100mAh | 9h 29 min

The Xperia Z3 was one of the better-performing endurance kings that appeared roughly a year ago. Even by today's standards, it is a notable entrant that exhibits a lot of stamina.

Nokia Lumia 635

1830mAh | 9h 35min

With a 1830mAh battery on board, one might deduce that the Lumia 635 isn't a formidable marathoner but they'd be totally wrong. This Windows Phone device endured for 9 hours and 35 minutes in our battery benchmark test, putting many phones with larger juicers to shame.

Meizu m2 note

3,100mAh | 9h 52min

We really liked the Meizu m2 note, mostly because it offers a lot of bang for the buck. One of its many strengths is its very good battery life - it ekes out 9 hours and 52 minutes out of its 3,100mAh juicer.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

2,600mAh | 10h 2min

The smaller-sized Xperia Z3 Compact has excellent battery life. The 2,600mAh juicer at the back can keep the lights on for up to 10 hours and 2 minutes, making the Z3 Compact a durable top-performing trooper.

Motorola DROID Turbo

3,900mAh | 10h 42min

The large battery at the back of the DROID Turbo aced our battery benchmark back in the day. The 3,900mAh juicer at the back kept the lights on for 10 hours and 42 minutes. Here's to hoping that Samsung will be able to hit that level of battery life as soon as possible.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active

3,500mAh | 12h 9min

The Galaxy S6 Active shares a lot of hardware similarities with the Galaxy Note5 - it's powered by the same chipset that can be found in the Note5. Imagine if the Note5 had a 500mAh bigger battery - we bet that it would be somewhat close to the 12 hours and 19 minutes that the S6 Active achieved in our test.
