TSMC 20nm chip manufacturing goes ahead of schedule
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, the world’s largest chip foundry, is planning on installing equipment for its 20nm chip manufacturing facilities on April 20, some two months ahead of the schedule, according to China’s Economic Dailys News.
At such pace, TSMC should start 20nm systems-on-chip production by the end of Q2 2013 at a rate of 5000 12-inch wafers per month. TSMC will ramp up production to over 10 000 wafers in the third quarter.
The internal goal for 20nm chips is a 30 000 to 40 000 wafer starts per month by the end of Q1 2014.
Around the same time last year, TSMC announced it will start mass producing 20nm chips at Phase 6 in the Fab 12 facility in Hsinchu this year, and add another fabrication facility in early 2014.
