Sony may have just cancelled its rumored Xperia Z5 Tablet lineup
Sony’s most recent tablet dates all the way back to 2015, with the official unveiling of the Xperia Z4 Tablet. However, after three years of silence, new rumors began to circulate earlier this year that Sony was finally preparing two new successors, the Xperia Z5 Tablet and Z5c Tablet, set to be launched this summer. With the timeframe just around the corner, though, one new rumor claims Sony has decided to bail on its plans entirely.
For those who don’t know, the larger Xperia Z5 Tablet was expected to boast a10-inch display while the Z5c Tablet would have featured a smaller 8-inch panel. Additionally, considering Sony's previous Tablet launches, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 and 845 were the most likely processor candidates. Nevertheless, despite their flagship internals, weaker-than-expected sales of the Xperia XZ2 smartphone lineup reportedly led Sony to cancel the tablet series altogether in the hope of focusing on its smartphone line.
Going forward, it will remain to be seen how Sony’s continued focus on its smartphone series plays out over time. Nevertheless, with 5G technology just around the corner, the Japanese giant is hoping this will give its smartphone sales the necessary boost in order to push itself back into the black.
Recently, Sony announced plans for its mobile unit to become a profitable business by 2020, with the brand confirming that it would streamline its product portfolio. Additionally, though, it’s worth pointing out that the tablet market has become extremely saturated in recent years, with Apple’s iPad line largely dominating sales – Sony’s tablet line is expected to sit at the higher end of the pricing segment, suggesting it would also face tough competition from Samsung. Not only this but the tablet market as a whole has seen a significant drop in consumer interest in recent times, suggesting the decision to cancel any planned launches may have been the right call.
