Samsung will announce a new Gear S smartwatch on August 30th at IFA
Samsung will unveil its newest Gear S smartwatch next week, on August 30th at the IFA consumer tech conference in Berlin. The information comes straight from the horse's mouth: Samsung mobile president DJ Koh confirmed it for CNBC.
The announcement of the new Gear S watch (that is likely to be called the Gear S4) will thus happen a week or two before the expected new Apple Watch unveiling allegedly set for early to mid September. Samsung's mobile president did not provide any further details about the next-gen Gear S smartwatch, so we're all left wondering in mystery.
Samsung unveiled its latest Gear S3 smartwatch in late August 2016 for a price of $350, but sales only started in October. This year's announcement will thus come almost exactly one year after the S3 unveiling.
Meanwhile, Samsung has just published official details about its brand new wearable fitness tracker: the Gear Fit 2 Pro. With a square focus on fitness activity, the Gear Fit 2 Pro is now water-proof and can also track your swimming workout, similarly to the Apple Watch Series 2.
The Gear S, however, is a full-fledged smartwatch with the proper looks and advanced functionality, as well as independent LTE connectivity. The latter feature was a signature one for the S3 series. Apple's new Watch is expected to incorporate a similar functionality in its upcoming new version.
