Powerusers often crave features, which modern smartphones are still incapable of consistently delivering, especially when they need to fit in contemporary-looking, thin designs. The common desires among customers are longer battery life, good gaming experience, competent camera performance, and durability since freak accidents often cut a phone’s life short.

The new Doogee S90 looks to address all of these ails with its modular concept.

Rugged on the outside, powerful on the inside

At its core, the Doogee S90 is a rugged smartphone meant for active folks or those who work jobs like construction. The body is made out of a titanium alloy, it’s resistant to water and heat, and protected by rubberized corners. Besides your regular power key and volume rocker, the phone also has a physical shutter button on one side and a customizable action button on the other. Those, combined with the facial unlock feature, will make it easier to use the phone when wearing gloves, or when in a wet environment. Of course, there's still a fingerprint scanner on the back for the classic unlock experience.

It may be a rugged device, but it's also a powerful phone, with a 2 GHz, octa-core MediaTek Helio P60 — a top-tier processor, developed to support deep-learning AI and face-recognition features —, 6 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of expandable storage. It has a modern, tall 6,18-inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 2246 pixels (9:18.6 ratio). There are two cameras on the back — with 16 MP and 8 MP sensors, made by Samsung — and a single one at the front, which sports an 8 MP Sony sensor.

All of this is powered by a rather huge, 5,050 mAh battery, which should keep the lights on for quite a while. Not enough for you? Well…

Enter the modules

The Doogee S90 launches with four different modules to enhance user experience. These will snap on to the back of the phone via a magnetic connector, so they are an easy-on-easy-off solution.

First and foremost, we have the power bank module, which will instantly add an extra 5,000 mAh battery to the already meaty 5,050 mAh cell inside the phone. Then, we have a game module, which adds a D-Pad and an analog joystick to the phone, transforming it into a portable console. A digital walkie talkie module will make sure you stay connected to your buddies even when hiking in remote places. And finally, a night vision camera module is there to boost your photos in the dark by increasing light sensitivity 12-fold.

The Doogee S90 is currently up on Kickstarter and you can score it for $299 for the phone only or $399 for the phone bundled with all 4 modules. Alternatively, you can pick a bundle with the phone and just 1 module — these are priced between $318 and $348, depending on which module you want.
