Report: LG Display sees 90% drop in shipments of 9.7 inch Apple iPad screens
According to a report that cites the usually anonymous industry sources, LG Display has seen a sharp drop in the number of 9.7 inch screens for the Apple iPad that it shipped last month. The report says that the display subsidiary of the Korean tech giant shipped all of 600,000 panels for the full sized Apple iPad in January. That compares with 6 million units that it shipped in December.
According to the sources, the reason for the huge decline has to do with the popularity of the smaller 7.9 inch Apple iPad mini and consumers' demand for lower priced Android slates. The sources said that LG expects to resume shipping larger amounts of panels to Apple with the coming launch of the next generation iPad due in the third quarter.
LG Display is still continuing to ship 3.5 million to 4 million Apple iPad mini displays each month. According to research firm WitsView, 65% of Apple's tablet shipments in the first half of 2013 will be for the iPad mini.
