RIM to offer BlackBerry users a browser as good as the iPhone's Safari by next summer?
In a video offered by brokerage firm TD Securities, analyst Chris Umiastowski spoke for 17 minutes on how RIM was doing in the consumer smartphone space vs. Apple as far as features are concerned, and naturally the topic of browsing came up. While the analyst did not say where his info came from, according to Crackberry, it appeared obvious that someone high up the executive ladder at RIM was the source. And the reason why this is important will become clear to you.
According to the analyst, RIM is aware that there are shortcomings in terms of browsing on a 'Berry, specifically zooming and panning. the Canadian manufacturer says the isue is an on-device one that has to do with a shortage of device RAM and is fixable. RIM says that it expects to have a browser on par with the iPhone's Safari by next summer. Another problem that will be fixed has to do with Javascript support. This is currently disabled on newly shipped handsets because of its tendency to slow down the browser. By this fall, new devices will be shipped with the Javascript enabled.
Finally, RIM has discovered why a BlackBerry running on Wi-Fi, can often run slower than if it were running on EDGE. the problem has to do with battery management which sometimes puts the Wi-Fi radio to sleep. Again, this is another problem that RIM will fix.
