Ingress, Niantic's first AR project is getting a long overdue overhaul in 2018. The company that brought us the overwhelmingly popular Pokemon GO
confirmed back in March that it's working on a new version of Ingress, which will be released by the end of this year.
However, for some reasons, the re-launch of the game has now slipped into 2018, a very busy year for Niantic, as the company plans to release yet another
AR game based on the Harry Potter franchise.
Along with the re-launch, the game will change its name to Ingress Prime. The most important change developer Niantic confirmed for the new game is the fact that Ingress Prime will use the same technology platform as
Pokemon GO.
There are a few advantages that derive from this, such as the fact that Ingress Prime can benefit from a few new technologies like
ARCore (Google) and
ARKit (Apple), but it will also make it much harder (or impossible) for players to cheat the game system.
Graphics-wise, Ingress Prime will be much more appealing to players than the original version, but it will also be more user-friendly. Naturally, there will be other changes added to the game, but they will be revealed closer to release.
