Dark Mode returning to the Android Messages app with next update
Earlier this month, Google added a long awaited Dark Mode option to version 3.5 of the Android Messages app. The feature allows users to switch the app's UI from black text on a white background to white text on a black background. At night, using Dark Mode prevents users from getting blinded by the bright white background of an app; some just like the look of Dark Mode and even employ it during the day on apps with the feature. The new UI for Android Messages also included Google's Material Theme, which meant plenty of white space (when Dark Mode is disabled) and the use of Google Sans font.
But before anyone could use Dark Mode on Android Messages, Google surprisingly pulled it from the app with a server-side update. This upset several Android users who were looking forward to using the setting on the Messages app. But all's well that ends well. The next version of Android Messages, v. 3.5.052, will include both the Material Design UI and Dark Mode feature.
If you just cannot wait for the next Android Messages update, you can use APK Mirror to sideload the APK. The latter is signed by Google, and you can install it now by clicking on the sourcelink. Or, you can wait for the update to arrive OTA on the Google Play Store.
