New contract free T-Mobile plan offers BlackBerry Curve 8520 for $300 with 1 month of service
T-Mobile has devised another new plan for cellphone buyers just as we are beginning to make our way into the holiday shopping season. Named T-Mobile Complete, four handsets will be involved starting as low as $59.99. There is no contract with the "Complete" and the price of the phone includes the first month of service. What is included in that first month (data, texts, etc.) has not been disclosed.
Between the press release and some digging by Engadget, the name and price of two of the four phones involved have been revealed. The BlackBerry Curve 8520 will be sold for $299.99, which, as we noted, will include the price of the phone and cellular service for the first month. The BlackBerry Pearl will be $149.99. Once the first month is up, unlimited monthly plans will be available for as low as $50; the handsets will be available through Best Buy and selected Walmart stores.
We can see the reasoning behind the plan. You want to give a phone as a present, but you don't want to pay the monthly bill every 30 days-friendship runs only so deep. With T-Mobile Complete, you are giving a present consisting of a phone and 1 month service. Not a bad gift idea for the relative or friend who refuses to move into the 21st Centuty. In a totally unrelated, but interesting note, T-Mobile also announced that they expect 40% of Q4 sales to be from smartphones. We have to give props to the nation's fourth largest carrier. They have sure come a long way over the last year and there are a legion of cellphone fanatics just waiting to make the switch if T-Mobile gets the HTC HD2 as many have predicted.
