New BlackBerry Torch commercial is a whale of an ad
AT&T and RIM must think that they have a whale of a device with the BlackBerry Torch 9800. The two have combined on a new ad that re-tells Melville's famous novel, Moby Dick, using some of the much improved multimedia capabilities found on the Torch. Whether it is reading the book by turning your phone into an E-Reader, using facebook to put together a crew for your boat, or mapping out your route using the phone's navigational functions, the new OS turns this 'Berry into much more than a way for the pinstriped wearing executive to read and write e-mail on the fly.
The ad is a strong effort by AT&T and RIM to show that the BlackBerry 6 OS and the new WebKit browser can do almost anything that iPhone and Android users can do, such as checking for photos of Moby Dick on flickr, or reading the mobile edition of the WSJ and taking a closer look of the site by using "pinch to zoom". And while the ad won't replace reading the book, it does offer a very good look at the new BlackBerry software and hardware that RIM hopes will widen the appeal of their handsets from the businessman to the average consumer.
