MediaTek unveils the Helio P25 chipset
MediaTek has announced its new Helio P25 chipset. Made using the 16nm FinFET process, the chip is 25% more power efficient than the P10. A true octa-core CPU, the eight Cortex-A53 cores are clocked at speeds as fast as 2.5GHz. The chip also includes the ARM Mali-T880 dual GPU clocked up to 900MHz. It also supports 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The chip is designed to power units that carry dual camera setups. The Helio P25's Image Signal Processor works with phones equipped with a single 24MP camera on back, or two 13MP snappers.
A partnership with Samsung is expected to help the company increase its shipments this year by 11% over last year's deliveries. To help MediaTek achieve that growth, the Helio P25 should be found powering new smartphone models during the first quarter of this year. While MediaTek chipsets have been found inside many low-end devices, a trend that should continue this year, the company is hoping to become a legitimate choice for manufacturers building top shelf handsets.

MediaTek's Helio P line is produced for devices that need "Premium Performance" and balance speed with energy efficiency. The Helio P chipsets are designed for thinner smartphone models. The company's Helio X line offers "Xtreme Performance." For example, the Helio X20 features a deca-core CPU using a tri-cluster design.
