MediaTek: As many as two million Android One phones will be sold this year in India
Chip maker MediaTek is thrilled by the initial response to the three Android One handsets that were launched in India on Tuesday. The company is so thrilled in fact, that it is forecasting that 1.5 million to 2 million Android One handsets will be sold in India this year. This is the platform that Google has released to help manufacturers produce low priced entry-level phones in emerging markets. Because updates come directly from Google, they will be available for Android One models well before carrier purchased phones receive them.
Quicker updates is a great feature, but to be honest, the most appealing thing about these models has to be the price. The three handsets unveiled and launched on Tuesday include the Karbonn Sparkle V, Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498, and the Micromax Canvas A1. The price tags on the trio read $106 USD, $104 USD and $103 USD, respectively. All three models have a 4.5 inch screen with resolution of 480 x 854, and are powered by a quad-core 1.3GHz MediaTek MTK6582 processor under the hood. Each phone is equipped with 1GB of RAM inside.
As we said above, sales are off to a good start. Reports suggest that Amazon has already sold out of its initial inventory of the Micromax Canvas A12. There is no word yet on how the other two handsets fared on Tuesday.

"In the short term, there can be disruptions. But, this will eventually lead to handset makers not part of Android One to invest on innovating the mobile experience."-Mohit Bhushan, VP, MediaTek
