LG.Philips announces 1.3 mm LCD panel - world's slimmest
The 1.3 mm thick TFT-LCD panel announced by LG.Philips is the world's slimmest one up to now. It should enable mobile phone manufacturers to make handsets even thinner, probably breaking the 6.9-mm barrier set by the Samsung X820. The new display panel is 32% slimmer than currently used LCDs, which measure between 1.9 and 2.9 mm. Even more impressing is that it's even thinner than OLEDs, as they are typically between 1.5 and 1.8 mm thick. The new TFT-LCD panel is also said to raise the brightness from 300 to 400 cd/m2 thanks a new backlight technology. The 1.3 mm LCD panel is scheduled to be unveiled at the SID Mobile Displays 2006 conference in San Diego, California on October 3.
