LG made a tiny, hexagonal battery that should improve smartwatch battery life
While smartwatches have displays that are considerably smaller than smartphone screens, they also have way smaller batteries which are barely capable of providing satisfactory usage times. LG Chem (a division of LG Corporation) plans to solve this problem with a new hexagonal battery specifically developed for smartwatches.
Thanks to its hexagonal design, the new LG battery would be a perfect match for smartwatches with circular displays.
According to The Korea Times, LG Chem claims its new battery can improve usage time by 25% compared to rectangular batteries, allowing smartwatch owners to get up to 4 extra usage hours from a single charge.
Reportedly, the hexagonal battery was developed in collaboration with a top-tier company, which isn't Apple, and - interestingly - neither LG Electronics (as you may know, LG Electronics already released several smartwatches with circular displays). The new battery is now shipping to its first mysterious customer(s), but it's not clear exactly when we'll see smartwatches using it.

LG Chem plans to develop more batteries with unusual designs, including a rectangular one with a hole in the middle, or an L-shaped one. By 2018, the company expects to become the world's top supplier of small batteries for smart devices.
