Ice Cream Sandwich comes to Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 and 7.0 Plus in the U.K. only
Android 4.0 has made its way to a pair of Samsung tablets, the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 and the Samsung GALAXY 7.0 Plus. You might recognize the former as being the subject of a preliminary injunction in the U.S. which brings up another point about this update. It is only for those units inside the U.K. Not that U.S. owners of these two tablets won't ever get to taste Ice Cream Sandwich, it's just that it might take a bit longer than for the overseas machines.
The Android 4.0 rollout isn't stopping with these two tablets. Samsung says future updates of the Galaxy Tab line will be "announced in due course". Word is that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the Samsung GALAXY Tab 8.9 will be the next two Samsung tablets to be graced with the Ice Cream Sandwich update. The update can be loaded onto the tablets either over the air or by connecting to your PC and using the Kies software.
The scattered updates for these tablets underscore the difficulties that OEMs are having getting Android updates out in a timely fashion. With the Google Nexus 7 sporting the latest and greatest Android build, it gives those tablets getting Android 4.0 the feeling of being one-step behind when the feeling should be one of being cutting edge after being updated. And when it comes to Android 4.1, what else can Samsung say except that it will announce any such updates in due course.
