We've been hearing about Huawei's upcoming "triple-camera" P20 for a while now, and that it will also come in three versions, including a Lite model, which likely won't have the fancy camera set of the top-shelf P20. Today, a few leaked images, of an alleged prototype, and case maker renders, flesh out those rumors a bit more, as on one of the sources we see a triple vertically-situated camera, and what seems like a dual LED flash plus a laser focus, while the other makes do with a dual arrangement in a horizontal placement, and a single LED.
Thus, the P20 might have Plus and Lite models, as Huawei is known to throw in, which will feature different designs, sets of cameras, and power under the hood. The leaked Plus prototype is interesting in its own right, despite the "mere" dual camera setup, as its front shows a top bezel cutout in the iPhone X's notch style, bringing the screen-to-body ratio way up. Let's not forget that Huawei teased a 3D face recognition system similar to Apple's not long ago, and perhaps we will see its iteration in the new P-series handsets.
The notch here seems too narrow to house all the paraphernalia like the depth camera and the dot projector, but this might be a cheaper model in the new family still, which Huawei could have equipped with 2D face recognition of sorts, like on Samsung's phones. In any case, the source does say prototype, which on top of that is in a testing mule housing, so we'll have to wait and see what Huawei actually ends up with.
The case maker renders are the next thing that caught our eye, as they come from various sources, but all show a tall vertical opening on the back, presumably where the triple camera sensors of the P20 go. There are also three side buttons for volume and locking, as well as what look like a standard audio jack up top. There isn't any other cutout on the back, so the fingerprint scanner will likely go at the front, like on the Plus version. As for the Lite model, it will also seemingly have a vertical dual camera, but adds a rear finger reader cutout to the mix.
Huawei is expected to unveil the P20/Plus/Lite, or whatever it names them, some time in late March, rather than at MWC this month, so we'll have some time to learn more about the handsets before they become official.
