HTC's Dot View hits the Google Play Store for easier updates in the future
HTC has put up its Dot View app on the Google Play Store. The app supports the Dot View case for the new HTC One (M8). When the case is closed over the front of the phone, lights shine through the holes in the Dot View case to ape the look of an old-time LED display (think Lite Brite). By putting this on the Google Play Store, it makes it a lot easier for HTC One (M8) users to update it in the future. Let's say that HTC wants to update the Dot View case. Instead of waiting until it has enough changes to send out to warrant a full system update, the Taiwan manufacturer can simply update the app.
Listing system apps on the Google Play Store has been Motorola's MO lately with Active Display and Assist having their own apps to name a couple. Motorola has even updated those two apps already. But with the new HTC One (M8) having just launched, the Dot View app doesn't do anything differently than the phone does at this point. That includes being able to make or take calls with the cover on, receive email notifications, weather updates, time and date, and information about battery life.

HTC took the flip cover window, which has become increasingly popular amongst Android manufacturers for their top-shelf phones, and put its own stamp on the idea of receiving information from your phone while the cover is closed. Kudos to HTC for not just copying the others.
