Mo Versi, HTC VP, product management, has just sent out a tweet with long awaited news for some Verizon customers. Starting tomorrow, August 20th, Big Red's version of the HTC One M9 will start receiving the Android 5.1 update via an OTC update. In addition to the new build of Android powering the handset, the update contains a patch to guard against the Stagefright exploit.
Before you start the process of installing and downloading the update, make sure that you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. In addition, you should make sure that your battery is charged to at least 50%.
Among the new features of Android 5.1 is the one that prevents a lost or stolen handset from being factory reset until the rightful owner signs into his/her Google account. The native Battery Saver is added to the handset as are the new animations for Quick Settings. Speaking of Quick Settings, that is where you will now find a flashlight for the One M9. The 64-bit ART Runtime compiler is improved, allowing apps to open even faster, and 4G LTE bands 3 and 7 will now be available for roaming.
Those are just a few of the changes coming your way if you own the Verizon branded HTC One M9. Because the update is being sent out OTA, it will be disseminated in waves. That means that even though the update starts tomorrow, it still might take a few additional days to reach you. If it doesn't come tomorrow, there is no need to go ballistic. Don't email John Stratton (Verizon Wireless CEO) or Jason Mackenzie (President of HTC Americas). Take your mind off of the update by going bird watching, expanding your leaf collection, or by binge watching Grey's Anatomy. Before you know it, the update will hit your handset.
