HTC Velocity 4G coming soon, to be the first LTE smartphone in Europe
The HTC Velocity 4G will be the first 4G LTE-enabled smartphone in Europe’s biggest market - Germany. Local carrier Vodafone Germany plans to finally introduce the country and the continent to the next generation of mobile data with a snow white version of the Velocity 4G. The handset is expected to hit stores in the next couple of weeks, but the exact launch date and price were not yet revealed.
Europe follows Australia which just recently launched the Velocity 4G as its first LTE handset on local network Telstra.
The LTE chip on the handset offers theoretical download speeds of up to 100Mbps, while upstream is limited to 50Mbps. The Velocity 4G features a huge 4.5-inch qHD (960 x 540 pixels) display and a dual-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz. With a big screen like that and LTE, there will be an extra strain on that 1620mAh battery.
Vodafone Germany has already deployed over 2,000 base stations covering nearly 8.5 million households. The company focuses mostly on providing LTE as a replacement to DSL services in rural areas and it uses 800MHz bands.
The HTC Velocity 4G won’t actually be offered nation-wide in Germany, but only in the areas where 4G LTE is available.
