A late tweet from HTC executive Mo Versi reveals that the manufacurer has now received technical approval from Google, and will start pushing out the Android 5.0 update to the HTC One (M8) Google Play edition later today. The stock Android version of the device was supposed to receive the update late last month, but when that failed to happen, a second attempt was planned for the beginning of this month. That was delayed, too. Both times, HTC said it was waiting for the green light from Google.
But now that the green light has been received, the update will start to push out OTA beginning at 12 noon EST on Friday. As usual for such a massive update, you should be on a Wi-Fi connection while downloading it. And the battery on your HTC One (M8) Google Play edition should be charged to at least 50% before starting the updating process.
Versi's tweet didn't include any information about the HTC One (M7) Google Play edition, which originally was supposed to be updated at the same time as the newer HTC One (M8) GPe. Those with the older model will apparently have to continue to wait for the go ahead from Google. At the same time, since the update is being distributed on a staggered basis, Android 5.0 might not reach your HTC One (M8) Google Play edition for a few days. Be patient, and your handset will soon be rockin' Lollipop.
The HTC One (M8) Google Play edition will be receiving Android 5.0 via an OTA update, starting today at noon
