Google keeps focus on design by purchasing Timely developer Bitspin
Somehow, a bit of interesting news slipped through the cracks over the weekend as we were getting revved up and ready for CES in Las Vegas: Google has purchased Bitspin. Bitspin is best known as the developer of the highly regarded Timely app on Android. Timely has been widely cited as one of the best designed apps of the year, which is likely the aim of Google with this acquisition.
Bitspin announced the deal on its website, saying:
We're thrilled to announce that Bitspin is joining Google, where we'll continue to do what we love: building great products that are delightful to use.
For new and existing users, Timely will continue to work as it always has. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded our app and provided feedback along the way; we truly appreciate all your support.

The Timely app is still in the Google Play Store and doesn't look to be going away, which is great news. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, and it is also unclear what projects the Bitspin team will be working on as they join the Google team. But, let's face it, Google doesn't really need developers who make good alarm clock apps; Google definitely needs quality designers to continue the company's new-found focus on design. We would love to see what the Bitspin team can do with the design of some Google products.
