Google's video chat app Duo tops 1 billion downloads on Google Play
Have you ever tried Google's video chat app Duo? The two year-old app has now been downloaded more than 1 billion times, as spotted by Android Police. Why, it was just back in July of 2017 that Duo first reached 100 million installs. Not to take away from that ten-fold increase, but that figure includes new Android devices that come out of the box with the app pre-installed.
Back in May, Duo had 500 million installations, which means that another 500 million were added in the last six months alone. Google unveiled Duo at Google I/O 2016 along with its Allo messaging app. Duo debuted first on August 16th, 2016, while Allo launched on September 21st. While Duo has been a success, Allo not so much. The latter will shut down in March 2019.
Just last week, Google wanted to promote the fact that the Duo app is also available for iPhone users. So it released a series of ads showing how families and friends can video chat even if one owns an Android powered phone and the other person owns an iPhone. Of course, that calls for both the Android and iOS users to have the Duo app installed on their respective devices. And a few months ago, Google updated the Duo app to make it compatible with both Android tablets and iPads.
