There's this special type of games that we call a "Souls-like". On the surface, they are just an RPG in a fantasy setting where you control a sword-wielding hero that's up against overwhelming odds. However, a series by the name of Dark Souls took the gaming world by storm with a combination of amazing, dark, atmospheric story-telling, fine-tuned fighting mechanics, and a tough, punishing difficulty.

All of this was complemented by a pretty rich selection of loot and items that one can find, with awesome-looking gear dropping from the tough, tough bosses.

"You can never have a game like that on mobile", we hear you say.

Well... let us present Animus – Stand Alone. A mobile-only title (available for Android and iOS) that is very, very Dark Souls-inspired. That's not to say it's a copycat, of course — the game has its own story and it's own set of drab, depressing locations where you have to fight a ton of terrible demons and bosses that can cut you down in a single swing.

You've got the familiar dodging, blocking, and swinging system from Souls-like games, together with the health and stamina bars, either of which you definitely don't want to see depleted! The sound design of the game is just amazing, from swings, to hit confirmations, to the epic soundtrack that just pulls you in. Graphically, it's quite impressive, too. Sure, phone hardware is still not on console level, but the developers managed to squeeze whatever they could from our handheld devices and the game looks gorgeous.

"You can't play a Souls-like with a touchscreen!" we hear you say. Well, Animus – Stand Alone is also compatible with a controller — both on Android and iOS. It's also discounted right now — down to $2 from its regular $8 price! So, go ahead — put your tryhard pants on and give this one a spin!
