Asus ZenWatch 2 announced at Computex; OLED screen with Gorilla Glass 3 protection, Snapdragon chip

Monday in Taipei saw Asus introduce the Android Wear powered ZenWatch 2 at Computex. The company is offering its new timepiece in two sizes. The large model weighs in with a 41mm face and a 22mm band, and is the exact same size as last year's Asus ZenWatch. But in order to please those who complained about the size of the OG model, Asus is now offering a smaller version that features a 37mm face with an 18mm band. Pricing and availability have yet to be announced.

Both watches feature an OLED display that is protected by 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3. An unnamed Qualcomm SoC is powering the device. There is speculation that the same Snapdragon 400 chip that powered last year's model has been given the task again this year. Last year's watch had an IP55 certification for protection from dust and water. This has been bumped to IP67 with the ZenWatch 2. This allows the watch to sit in as much as 3.28 feet of water for as long as 30 minutes and emerge unscathed.

Besides a new magnetic charging system, the Asus ZenWatch 2 also has a crown that offers some functionality for users, although Asus has not yet made it clear what the functions are. Potential buyers will be happy to hear that the battery life of the ZenWatch 2 is said to be improved over last year's model. The watch will be offered in silver, gunmetal and rose gold with rubber, leather and metal straps available. One luxury model will feature a band made with Swarovski crystals.
