Apple's smaller iPad to actually be called the iPad Mini indeed, speculation mounts
We've been referring to the smaller, more affordable tablet expected from Apple this fall, as the iPad Mini, for the sake of convenience, but it could very well be something else.
From the eminent Japanese Apple-centric blog Macotakara now comes the confirmation that Apple could very well call its 7.85" sub-$300 tablet the iPad mini indeed. Sources for the claim are supply chain players from Asia.
Apple went off its way to name the third generation iPad something different instead if the iPad 3, as most of the blogosphere was using before the actual announcement, because Phil Schiller said they wanted to keep the surprise factor, so it got named simply the new iPad.
The iPad logo will be printed on the back of this mini, as anyone could've easily guessed, but the source mentions that the new iPad will also be getting the 8-pin dock connector from the iPhone 5 and the iPad mini, at least the version that Japanese carriers intend to offer. The iPad mini is expected to be announced at the annual October iTunes event of Apple, whereas the next iPhone we are going to see at the dedicated September 12 event.
