Earlier this month, KGI Securities superstar Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple is going to release three iPhone models next year, including a premium priced 5.8-inch Apple iPhone 8 that will pack an OLED screen and contain all the bells and whistles expected of a device commemorating a decade of the Apple iPhone. The iPhone 8 will have an active touchscreen area measuring 5.1 to 5.2-inches and Barclay's analyst says it will be bezel-less.
Kuo now believes that Apple will keep the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus names on the 2017 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models respectively. Both of those units will continue to sport LCD screens. They both should be powered by the A11 chipset and all three units will feature an all-glass casing. This will allow the three new iPhone models to offer wireless charging at faster speeds. Metal casings tend to slow down the technology. Kuo also says that Foxconn will have its hands full with the OLED screen on the iPhone 8, leaving Pegatron to handle the wireless charging.
"We believe one of the reasons why new iPhones will switch from metal casing to glass casing is to support wireless charging. In order to ensure a superior performance, we believe it is most appropriate for EMS suppliers to develop and make the wireless charger because then a comprehensive test can be conducted. As Hon Hai needs to deploy most resources to develop and produce OLED iPhone, we expect Pegatron will be the exclusive supplier of the wireless charger."-Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple analyst, KGI Securities
It isn't clear yet if Apple will support wireless charging on all three of next year's models. Ming-Chi sees some iPhone units coming with wireless charging capabilities next year, with wider support expected for 2018.
