Apple has a new way to force restart or hard restart the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
Apple has a new way for users to do a force reset or a hard reset for the latest versions of the iPhone. On the Apple iPhone 7 and Apple iPhone 7 Plus, rebooting either model requires the user to press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds. At that point, the Apple logo appears. This method cannot be used on the newer Apple iPhone 8 and Apple iPhone 8 Plus because it activates the new Emergency SOS feature. With the latter, you can scroll across a slider bar to make an emergency call, or set up your phone to auto call 911 whenever the feature is opened.

With the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, you need to follow three steps in order to do a force or hard reset. The process involves:

  • Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  • Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  • Press and hold the Side button (power button) until you see the Apple logo.

To power off the phone, hold down the Side (or power) button for a few seconds until the "slide to power off" slider bar appears. Added to iOS 11 this year in the Settings app is a "Shut Down" option that can also be used to turn off the phone.
