Apple Watch 3 could be unveiled along with the new iPhones in September

It's no secret that Apple plans to unveil new iPhones in September, but there's one more thing that's likely to make an appearance at the event. The sequel to the Apple Watch 2 seems to be on track for a September unveil as well.

The so-called Apple Watch 3 will be announced along with the iPhone 8 and two other iPhone 7s models, CNBC reports. According to a source with knowledge of the matter, the next Apple Watch won't need to be paired with the iPhone to receive calls.

If Apple Watch 3 will be a standalone wearable device not requiring tethering to an iPhone, some customers who can't afford or don't want to own an iPhone might be tempted to purchase Apple's smartwatch.

The source cited claims the Apple Watch 3 will pack an embedded SIM, not a physical SIM card, in order to make use of cellular connectivity. Aside from making and receiving calls, Apple Watch 3 users will also be able to stream music without having to pair the smartwatch to an iPhone.

It remains to be seen whether or not Apple will be able to beef up the battery of its smartwatch, since adding features like cellular connectivity will drain it faster than before.

Finally, a previous report suggests the next-generation Apple Watch will be equipped with an Intel modem, and it will be sold by just about all major carriers in the US (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon).
