Amazon cuts the price of its two Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablets
The Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4G LTE are both getting a short-term cut in price. Both tablets will have its price drop by a tick above 10% and the sale price will remain in effect until at least February 8th, which is this coming Friday. The sale price for the Wi-Fi only version of the tablet is $269, for a $30 savings; the 4G LTE version of the slate is now $449 after a $50 price reduction.

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and the Amazon Kindle Fire 8.9 4G LTE both have the same specs except for the LTE connectivity on the latter tablet. Amazon is charging $50 a year for 250MB of data a month. Both tablets offer an 8.9 inch LCD screen with resolution of 1920 x 1200 which translates into a 254ppi pixel density. Under the hood is a dual-core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4470 processor with the PowerVR SGX544 crunching the graphics. 1GB of RAM is on board and 32GB of native storage is included. With no microSD slot available, you can buy cloud based storage from Amazon. A 1.3 front-facing camera is the only shooter on the tablet and Android 4.0 is installed out of the box. Just keep in mind that there are no Google applications on the device, not even the Google Play Store. Amazon is happy enough to sell you content and apps.

So why cut prices now? Robert Baird analyst Colin Sebastian sent out a short note to clients on Monday suggesting that Amazon might have had to cut inventory after a "soft" holiday season. By the way, to get the discount, you need to enter FIRELOVE in the code box at checkout.
