$59 will get you the Samsung Gem on contract from Bluegrass Cellular
We recently reported that the Samsung Gem reappeared on a Samsung web site prior to having the device launched on regional carriers. Originally designed with Verizon in mind, the Korean based carrier was true to its word as it has been announced that the handset will be available from Bluegrass Cellular, a Kentucky based regional carrier. With a signed 2 year contract, the cost of the phone is just $59, or $205 without getting locked in for 2 years.
The mid-level Android device will have an 800MHz processor under the hood, a 3.2 inch WVGA display that has anti-scratch and anti-smudge properties, and sports a 3.2MP camera on the back. Android 2.1 is installed at launch and perhaps as a consolation prize, the phone comes with the Swype keyboard pre-installed out of the box.
The Samsung Gem sure isn't the most powerful handset with Android aboard, but for someone new to smartphones or the Android OS specifically, this would make a gem of a handset.
