2018 LCD iPhone may not use Apple A12 chip after all; older processor likely

While the premium 2018 iPhone X and iPhone X Plus are still expected to ship with the brand-new A12 processor, the cheaper LCD model may not follow suit. Referenced as “iPhone xx,” “iPhone 9.7,” and with the model number “N84” within the code, it appears the upcoming 6.1-inch iPhone will skip the next-generation processor in favor of the Apple A10 Fusion chip which can currently be found inside the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Unlike these two devices, however, the code does confirm that Apple’s next budget offering will make use of an all-screen design.

Elsewhere on the spec sheet, recent information has suggested that the model, which may simply be called iPhone (2018), will ship with 3GB of RAM, much like the iPhone 7 Plus. Unlike this smartphone, however, the new device is only expected to feature a single rear camera. Also, TouchID is set to be replaced by the newer FaceID, with the sensors required for this once again being hidden within the notch.

With just under a month to go before the expected event date, it should only be a matter of weeks before Apple sends out the official invites. In the meantime, though, the company is continuing to stay as tight-lipped as ever.
