Rumors of a portrless iPhone have been floating around for years, but it appears that Apple has scrapped the idea because it fears how the EU would react to such a device. Considering the continuing clashes between Apple and European regulators, that move is understandable. However, from a user perspective, things might be a little different. After all, that would’ve been a truly unique smartphone, and tech enthusiasts appear to need one of those desperatly.

Do you think a portless phone is a good idea? Would you pay for such a device? What do you think the pros and cons would be? Do you think other brands could complete Apple’s idea and just skip the EU market? Share your thoughts!

There are no regulations in the EU prohibiting portless devices. Apple wouldn't be the first selling those, by years. Can we please stop the revisionism they're always selling? The main problem with Apple doing these types of devices is their abysmal device integration. I do personally hope more flagship devices would be made without ports and even without mechanical buttons. It would allow for more compact and more durable designs. A Lumia-style polycarbonate device would be practically indestructible.

I want a port. I do not think I'd buy one without a port. If they ever get the wireless charging to be as quick and carefree as wired, maybe I would consider it. But I still like the thought of being able to connect a memory card to the phone through the USB port to back up videos, or to export them for editing on a computer.

Wireless charging is definitely better, just drop it on a table and have it charge, so much better than having to find a cable and plug it in, the usb c made it easier than the the micro, but a wire will never be as easy

being tired (or drunk) will increase the chances that someone will forget to charge the phone or struggle to use a cable

snatching your phone in a hurry will cause no harm wirelessly, but can damage either the port or the cable when wired

portless reduces the chance of dirt or liquids getting in making the device strong and less likely to get damaged

only issue is (as mentioned) transferring of data, that needs to be sorted to get similar to wired speeds before we get rid of ports

i do miss the 3.5mm jack though

No. Not all cars, even new ones, can connect to android auto or carplay wirelessly.

While a portless phone is a solid idea, transfer speeds for wireless protocols are patchy, airdrop is solid but is only apple to apple right?

If only apple could licence airdrop functionality to non apple phones, does Android have an equivalent nowadays with comparable speeds?

Wireless charging is perfectly fine, but sometimes I just need that extra boost of high speed charging that wireless doesn't quite offer yet, but again it isn't far off, with a few tweaks a portless flagship is perfectly capable.

A portless iPhone would no doubt lead to a portless iPad, and that would bug me initially, as I edit on the iPad directly from an SSD, although im sure wireless SSDs would be more common place if such a move happened so i could live with that :-)

The EU have already said that a portless device is perfectly fine.... they specified that if the device offers wired charging it MUST be USB-C standard, but it also said that not offering a charging port is perfectly legal, it would also have to follow a standardised wireless protocol to avoid any trouble....this is directly from an EU representative.

Yes, let's be honest, the USB-C port was never made for charging, nor having the cable put in and taken out multiple times a day. You don't have to search long to find users who can no longer charge their device through USB-C because the little pin connector has gotten loose. So a portless phone would be preferable or better yet, a new port that looks like lightning-port, but is open standard and as fast or faster than USB-C

"let's be honest, the USB-C port was never made for charging, nor having the cable put in and taken out multiple times a day."

No, let's be logical because that's literally what it was made for.

"You don't have to search long to find users who can no longer charge their device through USB-C because the little pin connector has gotten loose."

9-10, those are people who felt the gas station, dollar store or airport USB-C cable worked just as well as OEM cables.

Again, let's be logical, which clearly this entire comment was not.

Yeah technology is all about making up for user error

humans are naturally inclined to be lazy and technology is helping us become more lazy and correct our errors

NO way! Apple is just mad because the EU and then the rest of the world shuttered the "copyright" lightning port for the USB-C port. That means Apple won't make as much money on selling genuine or licensed lightning cables.

No I don't see where wireless charging has advanced enough to get me through the day. I'm sure it will be at some point just not now.
