Lights, maybe as indicators of something important, I’m more interested if we ever going back to metal/aluminum backs. I hate glass: it’s horrible heat disbursement material unlike metal/alum. It’s also very prone to break and costs to repair are astronomical.

mid you want to put resources into something - bring back metal backs.

I'm not against small accent lights, but I don't see the purpose in it. Most people have their phones in a case, most of which will block the light unless it's transparent or purpose built for that device. And then how many of people are actually putting their phones face down so routinely that this would be an actual benefit. Samsung's old edge lighting made more sense because it was visible regardless of device orientation.

They wouldn't have to use a case is phones were not made of cheap materials like aluminum and glass. They could use more resilia t materials like composites or plastics. But then those oems will get ridiculed.

Now we have to pay for the higher price of cheap materials that get damaged easily.

The whole back of the phone doesn't need to light up. Having the old LED indicators would good enough back in the day.

To this day I don't see why oems don't make the flash LEd multicolored for just that usage.

Yes of course. More fun is always welcome. But you can turn it of when need to be more serious.

There's no downside since you can turn it on or off. It's also good marketing in social media.

I personally do not care about the lights since 99% of the time I'm looking at the front of my phone.

As a new alternative to Samsung's old edge lightning, manufacturers could incorporate lighting in the right and left sides of smartphone.

Yup, Good old polycarbonate that Nokia used on their old Lumia phones made for a durable device. I remember some reviewers writing about them as being "built like a tank".

Let's be honest, you keep the phone in your pocket, or on the table for AOD. I love the idea of the lights on the Nothing Phone, but after owning one, it really is just a gimmick that you forget about. Using it as a soft light is cool, but the camera sucks. Does help as a torch when the flash is just too bright.

Sure, lights are cool and all, but greatly limits the aftermarket case selection you can possibly consider.

On the other hand, optional extra lights are definitely welcome provided that they bring some extra utility to the overall experience, i.e. RGB for the sake of "RGB all the things" might only drive away regular non-gamer consumers.
