“I don’t think anyone cared what you had” - Well you would be surprised. I remember very clearly how many kids at school (college) used to ask to have a look at the 4 when it came out.
If it makes any difference, my Nokia N-Gage attracted more kids than even the iPhone for a long time.
Not that others could not afford it. But almost everyone at that time were mad about Blackberries and Nokia phones. So having an Iphone was different in many ways.
Sorry kiddo, I was out of school by the time modern smartphone came out. I think this whole iPhone as a status symbol that all you kids always yapping about was due to children’s level vanity.
I was in my early twenties and no one gave a crap about my iPhone on contrary anyone who had any jealousy (primary not because they couldn't afford it, but because iPhones were exclusively AT&T) and we’re just constantly waiting for android manufacturers to finally come up with “the iPhone killer”.

Going with the LG V30, iPhone 11 Pro and current Samsung S22 Ultra.
I agree not for the “flaunting” part - I don’t think anyone cared what you had. But the design of iPhone 5/5s was perfect.
