The EU has already squashed Apple's plans to try this in Europe. There were rumors Apple was goign to try to gimp the port, to only allow full speed charging and data transfers when only using an Apple licensed cable.
This alone shows how terrible this company is. Nothing new from them.
The main reason Apple didn't use the port they help design, was the revenue they would lose because USB-C is standard and Lightning is proprietary. Apple can't make money off open standards, which is why they don't use them.
IBM was also like this. See where they are now? They have been reduced from a hardware company to just software and server-side solutions.
Apple makes the majority of its cash on hardware, especially iPhone. In lost in revenue from iPhone, can't be made up on the Mac or iPad.
So Apples needed time to come up with a way to reduced these loses. You can expect, the phone price will rise and so will the prices of Apple's accessories as they likely will increase licensing of what they have left of proprietary products.
Apple makes nice hardware - things are seamless in their Eco system- I have an iPhone Pro 11 from back when to connect with my kids-I prefer an Open to Closed Eco and I'm glad the EU is looking out for the consumer****if the Google could make a Pixel phone or foldable with the same battery life as Apple I would be there
Like many have mentioned. Apple was dragged into updating to a USB-C kicking and screaming. They are looking for ways to turn it proprietary because milking their users is all they care about. They don't do things because they care about their loyal customers. They do things to extract every last penny from their blind, loyal customers. That is why I would never buy anything from Apple. I am not a fat plumpy cow to a blood sucking vampire.
Even though Apple's has to switch to the superior USB-C port, Apple has to put their twist on their USB-C ports on their iPhones. Especially when we are hearing rumours that Apple is going to limit both the data transfer speed, and the charging rate on their iPhone 15 models, unless you purchase Apple's USB-C cables.
I can also see Apple doing more of their saving the planet crap again, especially since Apple doesn't have to include any USB-C cable in the box anymore. I can see Apple's USB-C cables selling a lot more, especially if Apple places limits on their USB-C iPhone devices.

Pretty sure that was sarcasm.
in·no·va·tive adjective - (of a product, idea, etc.) featuring new methods.
The change to USB-C on the iPhone is a new method, ergo, it is innovative.
there will be some trouble with the Type-C connection, I sign.
It was....in 2014. Apple neither invented nor introduced the technology. So no. Sorry your fruit company didn't bring anything new to the table!
