The only reason I prefer the curved display of my S22 Ultra compared to the flat sides of my 14 Pro Max is because the latter becomes difficult to hold after 5 minutes. On the other hand, when I hold my wife's S22+ compared to my Ultra, I've never once thought to myself, "Man, I'm sure glad my display's curved compared to this flat mess!"

I really don't get why Samsung keeps making curved displays.

There are also phones with curved sides but flat displays, which are much better ergonomically. The entry-level Galaxy S-series comes to mind, as you pointed out. Also, you can curve the back glass without touching the display, which makes it much more comfortable...

I love me my flat screens...

But curves can be very tempting

Are we still talking smartphone displays here? :)))

After my S8 (protected by a case) fell right on the 45⁰ of the unprotected edge of its curved screen and cracked, I never bought another phone with curved screen.

My Ex dropped a plastic hairbrush on the edge of her Galaxy S9+ and it cracked like a cracker. Very sad.

While I agree with everything else that you said, I don't see how a curved display digs into your palm. I've had 5 devices with curved displays (Note 7, S7E, Note 8, Note 10+ & S22 Ultra) & none of them have dug into my palm. Meanwhile, 5 minutes into holding my 14 Pro Max (without a case) & I have to put it down.

I'm not sure how a rounded edge can dig into your palm compared to a flat edge.

Fair, let me clarify - the frame digs into your hand because it has to be much thinner to accommodate the curved screen, and in the end, the side of the phone becomes much sharper, if that makes sense. This is not a problem with a case, but then again, cases introduce other issues with curved screens.

Like the Note 5. That phone was beautifully built for its time. I never had one because that was the first time they ditched the SD card, but I'm curious to see if its dimensions with todays display design would be a good sized phablet device.

I see your point. A case actually helps me have zero accidental touches on curved displays. I know your preference is no case, so I understand how curved displays are rightfully frustrating to you.

They really serve no purpose to me. I've been disabling the Edge feature on Samsungs's since 2016, so with the exception of being more comfortable to hold than other devices (which we both confirmed there are devices with flat displays that are equally comfortable to hold) I really don't see why curved displays exist.

We're on the same page here. On the other hand, I still remember back in the day, when I was invited to the Galaxy S6 Edge premiere, how stunned I was by the design; it looked really cool and futuristic. Not at all practical - my mushroom palms touch the display when I hold a curved screen in my hand without a case, to the point where it's not operational... I'm generally against phone cases, but they're a necessity with curved screens...

Flat screen all the way. However the S23 ultra's curved display is not very curved. Maybe it's the best balance between flat and curved?

I need to lookup comparisons between the S21 Ultra & the S23 Ultra because I remember the display on the former being very minimal.
