I'm not convinced, personally, that the hanging cord and external battery pack are the most elegant solutions...

I agree that it's not elegant, but looking at the size and design of that part I genuinely don't think this will be a barrier. The pack itself is the same size as an iPhone and look how happily we carry those around - we never gave it a thought when we had walkmans and iPods cabled into our pockets! Plus whenever you are at home (all those sofa based adverts) or working on a Mac you can power this through the USB C without needing to worry about power at all. The only place I see this being an issue is while travelling - and I don't think anyone will ever take these on a plane honestly. You'd need to be wearing Airpods to cancel out the sound around you ON TOP of the weight and discomfort of this headset and I think it's just going to be too clumsy in this iteration to take onboard a flight for example.

I'm very interested to see if this new 3D imaging system will affect the iPhones cameras - perhaps the 15 series will be able to capture live photos in this new file format? It would very much make sense for Apple to start allowing people to capture content to view in 3d on these kinds of devices asap - content creation is just as important to a system as consumption.

No one wants to take videos and photos using the Vision Pro but we all have a camera with a depth sensor and portrait mode etc so it makes sense to make 3D Capture the next push in smartphone photography... And this way Apple would have a further way to lock people into the ecosystem and make a camera phone that truly is unrivalled even if the raw image quality is sometimes surpassed - in a similar way to how Live Photos makes it hard to swap away from the iPhone even if you improve the base image quality by going with a Xiaomi 13 Ultra!

This way even if a company came up with a similar headset, Apple would have its users already invested in the system before they even buy a Vision device as they'd have been taking 3D images and video for years before the headset itself becomes more accessible.

No-one in their right mind is paying that amount of money for a first gen dev kit. Anyone that does, needs their head checked.

I don't think you can judge anyone for their curiosity to try a new product. It's perfectly normal for people who can afford to try out the new tech.

Pretty impressive for a first generation product but it's also pretty expensive too. The price need to come down to at most a $1000 then it would be accessible to wider user base. Apple is betting huge on future of AR/VR which is almost certain to be the next big thing. This first generation device is like experimental phase to check how the audience would react, plus became the forerunner of the next revolutionary change in tech.

I'm not sure Apple does price cuts of that magnitude :))

Honestly I really do see this as having a future... Whether it is THE dominant future device or not... The interface, ecosystem and typical Apple polish all make it seem significantly more advanced than anything else out there and the control system is truly the most next-gen part of this tech. Apple have always been about usability and this is a clear hit out of the park on that point.

The social side of using a headset around people is still up for debate - I think it still seems heartless and cold but honestly if the tech makes that pass through more believable and the headset shrinks then I don't see this as too much of a barrier.

My main takeaway though is that this ISN'T a competitor to the iPhone or iPad. This is gunning for the Mac instead! If the pricing didn't tip you off then the all in one OS that connects to everything really should - this is designed to be a professional work tool and I really think it will absolutely be a competitor to people looking at buying a Mac and a ProDisplay XDR - and when you put it in context of that then it's actually very reasonably priced...

This is all very interesting and I'm excited to see how it works in real life one day myself!

I'm not sure the Vision Pro could ever achieve the productivity and speed a laptop with a physical keyboard and mouse has. But I haven't tried it myself, so it's all guesswork for now...

I don't think the silicon inside is the problem or has that much relevance to sales, price tag, etc... Apps and ecosystems are the things that have sunk AR/VR.

Apple could already be working on an upgraded M2, as well as an upgrade on that new R1 chip for their first headset, and release it in the released product. As far as the software, we know that VisionOS isn't 100% finished, especially when some of those demos were curtailed. Even the visionOS SDK is still being worked on, and Apple's own Xcode with the visionOS SDK updates still hasn't been released to the public. UNITY is going to take even longer to update because they need the Xcode updates first. Now 3rd party apps are needed to grow any platform. Apple did come out and say that their platform supports VR and AR, and they even said it supports VR gaming. However Apples Vision headset doesn't come with any VR controllers like you find on other VR platforms. Apple actually went out of their way to use eye, hand, and gesture tracking instead. That's fine for regular menu and OS usage, switching between apps, and doing a lot of daily tasks. Now when it comes to VR gaming, this is where I have a problem with Apple not including any standard VR controllers with their platform. Now developers can't rely on, or use any standard VR controller to help out with rapid input to a game, or app. Developers have to rely on eye, hand, and gesture tracking, which not only takes more time to develop, but trying to transition to other hand gestures, physically takes a user more time in an app, especially compared to a user just pressing a button on a controller. Those VR controllers give users rapid input with multiple buttons, and that is the key. Take a game like Fortnite, there is already a VR version of that game called Population One, where users can run, jump, climb, heal someone, and so much more. They can even switch rapidly between the different weapons within that game, and even reload ammo, and a lot more. Now there is many different weapon types within that game, which users can carry a number of them. So how does a user rapidly make input to a game using eye, and hand gestures? See with a VR controller you don't even have to have that controller in the headsets vision, and you can still switch very rapidly to other things within that game. If a Fortnite game is made for Apple's VR platform. Then how do users make rapid input to a game, a game like Fortnite which needs users to perform rapid input within a fraction of a second, because it can mean life and death within that fast paced game. What hand gestures can you rapidly make to switch to a machine gun, or a pistol, or to use a grenade, and then throw it. I can't see any fast paced game being on Apple's Vision Pro headset, like Call of Duty, Fortnite, Need for Speed, and so many other fast paced games which require rapid user input, as well as multiple inputs simultaneously. VR controllers can do just that, and have been doing that for years now. So with that said, I can't see Apple's Vision Pro becoming a competing VR gaming platform.

I just replaced three major appliances that were all over 13 years old and two of them were failing. Washing machine, dryer (the one still working OK) and refrigerator...the total for all three was about $200.00 LESS than this toy! Now which of these will last at least another 10 years or more???

ROTFLMAO!
